Some Torque Converter Questions
Some Torque Converter Questions
Well after posting the gears question, everyone seems to recommend the Converter before the gears. I have a few questions though. How do thesed things affect the everyday drive? Ive heard its almost feels like a transmission problem. And what would be the better brand to go with so I can shop around?
It depend on how high the stall is. My buddy got one on his 2000 Mustang GT. It did help in the 1/4 mile. I don't remember what stall he had, but it wasn't too high. I drove it and it kinda felt like you were taking off in 2nd gear. But when u floored it.........Man did i haul @ss.
His buddy is a mechanic(he runs a corvette), and recommended the VIGILANTE converter. He said out of experience, that was the best one. It was a bit more pricey but it is custom to your car specifications. It also guaranteed to take off 1/2 second off his 1/4 mile (assuming he didn't mess up).
Well the mechanic and my buddy raced his car and it indeed was about .5-.6 seconds quicker.
Hope this helps.

i have a 3400 in my car (switching to a Vig 3200 but those tend to stall to 35-3600 anyway) i dropped half a second off my ET with the converter....
driving a stalled auto feels kind of like the transmission is slipping a little...depending on how high the stall is you might feel like its just slipping a bit or it may feel like its totally broken (of course this is with like 5000 stall or higher..) when you get to a certain throttle level tho, the tranny stops slipping and takess off like a rocket....
your tranny will run at a higher rpm around town seeing as it needs more rpm to develop a load now than the stock TC. also performance TCs shift DOWN to a higher rpm (called shift extension i believe) this is intended to keep the car in its powerband and prevent it from losing acceleration when starting at the bottom of the next gear up after a shift.
all of this probably sounds really undesirable to drive around with but believe me, you get used to it after about a day....after that its just a whole lot of fun to get on the car again...feels like a whole different animal...
Check out Vigilante, TCI or Yank (little more expensive)
