Should I remove MAF screen?
If I was to port another MAF, I would keep the screen and hog out the MAF rather than doing both. I learned too late that the screen has a specific purpose. It straightens the air flow over the sensor so it can take an accurate reading. The MAF sits at a funny angle compared to the lid and TB, not to mention the fact that the lid is a compromise in airflow, so the air takes many tumbles as it travels. If it was me, I would hog the MAF, leave the screen.
Just my opinion.

You have a point, but I have been thinking about that... A Vette's intake system seems straight and more direct compared to ours.
May not mean anything. I sure would like to try this and see what happens though. It's just not a priority to me.

The primary purpose of the MAF screen is to direct air perpendicular to the MAF sensor. If that doesn't happen, the MAf thinks less air is entering the combustion chamber resulting in a lean mixture. Worst case senario....detonation
Some people don't have a problem, and others have the SES light staring at them. The F-body has a bent intake. The Z06 has a straight intake which mean it does not need a screen. Stopping large particles is a bonus. I'd leave it, but then, I'm not doing any mods soon.

At any rate, I would just leave the screen in. Seems like the riskes outweigh the benefits.
MAF ends are cheap enough @ $ 100.00 or so that it would be easier IMHO to buy them & leave the OEM pieces intact.
That way, in case it does cause a lean condition, you could always put the factory front back on.
On a side note, when I dynoed my A/F showed rich at the higher rpms, so I put the Thunder Racing ends I had in storage on to see if that helps any.

i read an article about this, "son of sam" in carcraft.(very good article, shows many mods and gains on dyno & 1/4 times) if i am correct on this screen, they removed it and had some gains but claimed it was because of an advance in timing? they warned that if you remove this to not use any gas less than 92 octane b/c your engine will no longer be able to retard the timing when pinging is occuring. according to them this piece somehow controls this ability to retard the timing. they also added that once the computer retards the timing it will not reset until the gas tank level is manipulated. this is because they programmed it this way assuming that once you fill the tank you have replaced the lower octane fuel? the vehicle in this article was a 2000 ss that the "school of automotive machinists" is working on.
hope this helps.

Cars that are programmed naturally rich respond well
to mods that cause lean mixture error (like porting
MAF or MAF ends). Cars that are lean get knock retard
instead. The '98-'99 I believe were richer, the later
years not so much. The power improvement is more
from mixture than airflow, airflow is the only "reason"
for descreening and porting the MAF. It's voodoo
mechanics. Buy a used MAF for $40 and go play,
mix-n-match, Dremel to your heart's content.
I swapped a descreened end onto my '02 and didn't
notice anything positive, just a bit more slip on the
shifts of the automatic. So I went back. Not worth
the wear / risk on automatics.
Much more bang from throttle body and throttle cable
cleanup, I tell you. Just as free, way more kick.
