second oil change.. this time im not payin $55.00
its about time for my second oil change on my new z. the first time i went to the the dealer they charged me $55.00 bucks for the synthetic. but i found out thats a rip off. so im going to pay 10 bucks and provide my own oil and filter. this way the dealer has record of it for my warrenty. but my question is Whats the best oil and filter to get?
Well one question does it say to use Synthetic Oil ?? When is it mandatory for the dealer to change engine oil for the warranty ?? If it does not matter which oil, I would go over to costco or even any parts store like Napa or Carquest, and buy 10w30 and spend the extra 2 - 3 and get one of the Premium Oil Filters ! I would/will change the oil and filter myself because, 1. I do not trust anyone when it comes to my cars and trucks. 2. I would rather spend $ 10 - 20 to service my own cars and trucks versus paying some jack *** at the dealer $ 55 to do a job that takes less then 40 minuets to do (including letting the oil to drain out as much as possible!!). and 3. Servicing the car is not that difficult, not like trying to replace Cap, Rotor, Wire and Spark Plugs on any 93 - 02 Camaro z28 or SS... And Pontiacs are even worse when it comes to Spark Plugs!!
This is just my opinion...

himselfI know it is just your opinion but I want to know why Pontiacs are harder??

For all you knuckle heads that can't find your distributor cap, bring it by. I'm kinda busy but I'll replace it for you. It'll only cost ya $100. But $85 of that is the part. I'm really doing you a favor here.
Really. Honest.

Oh and btw - back to the original question. Sorry.
I use Amsoil. Others use Mobil1. Others use Royal Purple or Redline I think. They are all fine. It's still debatable as to whether or not you're getting any more out of synthetic. But I'm sure you don't get less protection from it. So I use it.
The AC Delco PF58 filter is a very good filter to use. It's much cheaper than a Mobil1 filter too. It's listed for the 5.3 Silverado but it has the same dimensions as the stock LS1 filter except for being a bit longer for more filter area. Some people say that their oil pressure came up a bit by using this one. I didn't notice a difference on mine.

Figure you change the oil in your car every 3 months, or 4 times a year.
Lets say getting the 'good oil' costs $20 more.
That's just $80 a year you're saving by not using synthetic....
Worth it? It's up to you

the only problem is when you use organic oil your supposed to change every 3k, with synthetic i think its 6k. so really you only change the oil probably twice a year. it all evens out. i dont think you really save any money by changing your oil more often with cheaper stuff.
I noticed that you are from California, the same as I, my recommendation is to use a high grade sythetic oil 10W30, and the larger Mobil 1 filter, M1-206. I would install 6qts. of oil, being the stock change is 5.5, plus 1/4 to 1/2 qt. more for the longer M1-206 filter.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure the ignition on our cars (LS1's) are distributorless, right? We have coil packs, and no distributor, so how the hell you gonna see or change for that matter the distributor cap when there is no distributor. Well, just wanted to set things straight, and please correct if i'm wrong, I don't want to sound stupid.
