Re: SeaFoam? your take?

Put a full can in the gas tank, right before filling up.
IMO, do any maintenance that's due/over due (especially a coolant and transmission flush), and take a good look inside the intake and to see if there's much oil build-up in it.

If, there's anything more then a minor amount of oil consider removing the intake to clean it out with carb/choke cleaner or throttle body cleaner, and also the intake ports on the heads. IMO, If removing it isn't in the cards remove the throttle body and spray some towards each intake ports on the heads, and consider getting a catch-can.

Re: SeaFoam? your take?

The head gaskets are up for a change, I figure if I can get ahold of some ls6 heads I will go ahead and swap them out. I worked on other cars a little bit but I barely have an idea of what I'm doing, I know I'll be using this site quite a bit for some help, I want to do the work myself just feels more satisfying that way

You're buying it off your dad, so you know how well he took care of it and what specifically (if anything) you should focus on while doing your tune-up. If he changed the oil every 3 months or 3k miles, then you should have no issues with any built-up sludge clogging your oil pump. The same holds true for the fuel system if he ran 93 all the time and threw some injector cleaner/octane booster in there at each oil change. Change the fluids and consult your owners manual (if applicable) for whatever maintenance needs performed on the car per it's current mileage and get that taken care of as well. If you don't have an owner's manual, go to your local auto zone and pick up a Haynes manual for our cars, they run somewhere between 15-20 bucks. I've had one for every vechicle I've owned and they've proven to be great investments. Add the seafoam in with your new oil, then add the rest of it to your pcv/brake booster system and your gas tank as directed, drive it out, and you should be good to go.

Do NOT do this. Read the can and do as it says. Put the Seafoam in the oil and run for a 100 miles or less, then do an oil change putting the new oil in a clean crankcase.

Re: SeaFoam? your take?

I used Seafoam on my Vic when it hit the 75k mark. I Seafoamed it, did an oil change, and changed the sparkplugs. It ran great. So smooth. I loved it.

I don't know if I'll do it on the T/A. I've heard it's risky on higher mileage engines. Could let a big chunk of carbon loose and mess something up or something. So, I haven't risked it yet.

Re: SeaFoam? your take?

first post in years for me, still interesting to see the seafoam debate going on. I used seafoam on the 95 z28 a4 i had (around 150k miles) , no issues whatsoever. I plan on using it on my 99 T/A i recently purchased, since it does have 132k miles.

Agreed! Running Seafoam in Oil thins your oil out and changes the viscosity to help clean the sludge out. This means running thinner viscosity oil which will eat your bearings alive! Don't run it for more than 100 miles.

Ditto, All of my F-Bodies have loved Seafoam, regardless of the mileage. The Black RS and Silver Firebird W68 smogged up the atmosphere. My Z28 didn't really have a lot of dirt, but it DID shoot flames out of the exhaust!

Re: SeaFoam? your take?

the general consensus seems to be that seafoam is risky on high mileage engines. would it be safe to use it on my 43k mile engine then?

It would be fine on your 43k mile engine. I Seafoamed my black RS with 145k miles on the clock and no damage occured. My Z28 was seafoamed just shy of the 100K mark and no damage occured. My Silver W68 was seafoamed right before 100k aswell and no damage incured.

It'll be fine...
