Ready For some POWER

alright guys i have a 01 camaro SS A4 around 62,000 miles and all its has is an slp laud mouth cat-back i'm looking for more power yet keep it drivable. I'm hoping for close to 400hp the most bang for the buck would be nice. I'm thinking cam, heads, and what about shift kits my dads 79 z28 can slap first to second and sometimes kick her sideways. I'm not really sure any advice is appreciated.

Re: Ready For some POWER

I'm guessing you mean 400rwhp? What I would do is do LT headers, a cam something around the 230/232 range(maybe a little bigger), an LS6 intake, and a dyno tune. Other mods to do but won't add any hp would be some gears maybe some 3.73s, a stall matched to the cam, and subframe connectors for added traction.

Defiantly buy a good stall converter before the cam; do not buy a crap converter like TCI. Go with Yank, edge racing converters, circle D or a precision industries. You will want a 3200+ and 3:42+ gears. Put it this way, your car with the now with only stall and gears will be faster than it would be with stock stall/gears with the cam, intake and headers. I would not do a shift kit just a deep pan with a trans cooler and tune for firm shifts.

Re: Ready For some POWER

the car needs a converter, end of story. If you think your going to do a cam or heads/cam; go 3600+ (maybe even 3800-4400).

from minor bolt ons (lid/catback) a typical A4 ls1 will run low 13's to 12.8's.
Adding a converter will drop that to very low 12's. maybe a high 11 depending on traction and weight.

after the converter, you can go cam and exhaust or heads-cam. Any of the above mods will need a tune to get the most out of them.

Lid, Loudmouth, and free mods on a drag radial I went 12.96 best. Added just a Yank 3500 TC, adjusted the shift points and went 12.15 on a nice cool Michigan afternoon.

DO NOT go cheap on the converter! You cannot go wrong with Yank or Precision Industries. I've heard very good things about Circle D, but never had one. Go with a 3400-3600 minimum (3600-4000 if you cam it). The PI converters tend to run looser than their stall rating, so 3200 stall for a stock cam and a 3600 for most cams will work well.

I don't know why there's so much hate on TCI, i've had my TCI 3400 stall for over 3 years now and i beat the **** out of my car. Guess how many issues i've had? Zero.

Re: Ready For some POWER

Its not like I'm drag racing every weeken i just want to have a little more fun with it. The torque converter and different gears are kinda ehhh. i was thinking more along the line of headers, trans cooler, an intake, a dyno tune ? just to give it more snot

I would do headers and a converter that would probably benefit you the most. I know the converter and gears don't add hp but you will see a great difference in acceleration and 1/4 mile times if you do them.

Adding a converter like a Yank SS3600 with the stock rear gears will give you way more ''snot'' for fun driving than the mods you're listing. A higher stall lets the motor be in the power band in any gear at any speed.

You're one of the few. The lockup clutch is poorly designed, and the converters seem to lack performance overall. A few local guys bought those converters years ago and after nearly all burnt the lockup clutches and sent them through the trans, everyone I know stopped using them. The stuff I see on the internet is no different.

The torque converter needs more stall speed, even stock. Drag racing aside, a torque converter as recommended above will completely change the performance attitude of the vehicle. There's a good reason why you've got several people in here pushing you to replace the converter

Furthermore, if you decide to put headers on, you'll most likely want to put a real exhaust on it, something with a muffler. The Loudmouth sounds terrible once the stock manifolds and cats come off.

1 3/4" Longtubes, 3" X-Pipe into 3" 11229 (I think) Magnaflows dumped. I originally had the TSP bullets and well outside of getting me into trouble with LEOs it was just too damn loud. The Magnaflows sound amazing. Midwest chassis has a short torque arm that works well with true duals and my ground clearance isn't horrible.

Before I was cammed I did headers/ory/gmmg along with a SS3600 torque converter all at once and it totally changed the vehicle. +1 for not doing anything until you have a Yank sitting on your workbench. I did the exhaust while I had the tranny out. Put a nice cooler on it for added protection.

As a side note my SS3600 did ok with my G5x2 after I installed that. But I decided to restall it to a PT4000 and it was definitely better for a cammed car.

Re: Ready For some POWER

The original SLP headers fit horribly. They had very poor ground clearance. The new design is supposed to be better, but why chance it? Hooker and OBX (EBay) are inexpensive and fit well. Some seem to like the Pacesetter headers, but IMO they've always been a company known for junk exhaust - seems like the LS1 crowd gives them a free pass.

Don't bother with ANY SLP catback other than the old driver side double outlet system. Loudmouth systems are loud and sound terrible.
