You'll actually have to pay a bit more sales tax, too. If you trade your car in, the tax is calculated from the difference between the trade-in value and the sales price of the new car.

If you don't owe anything on your current vehicle (i.e. no monthly payments, just insurance and gas), I'd just just keep it and put a "Run Till Sold" ad in Auto Trader.

If you need to get rid of it fast, you can, of course, check on some small lots if they'd like to buy it. Price will be very low, though. Or go to CarMax and they'll give you an offer.

Depends on the car, of course. I doubt anybody would be that interested in a trashed out 1988 Ford Tempo, or equivalent. If you know what I mean.

Good luck!

All of the cars below were found within 300 miles of Victorville, $15k or less. The results I posted are from the FIRST page of the search, and there were 12 total pages on Autotrader. I think you need to look a little harder:

I've been recently looking for a 99+ Z28 (my credit union frown's upon 98 or older). But while I was looking around I found a '98 Black Z28 here in a San Diego suburb for $12,950 and I think it only had 46k miles. I'd buy it myself, but I found a much better deal in LA.
If anyone wants the # to that '98 let me know.
