Pros and Cons of buying a SC LS1 M6?
Pros and Cons of buying a SC LS1 M6?
I am going to be talking to My financial institute tomorrow about a 00' SS Supercharged that I found while reseaching my next Fbody. I am not sure if I am 100% convince to get the car yet. The car is an M6 that still has original clutch and it has had the Vortec after cooled supercharger kit installed on it for just under a year now. The car was tuned but not dyno tuned do to it have the stock clutch in it still. I love the way the car looks and I am hell bent on an SS LS1 so what should I be concerned with in making my decision.
PS- I have recently found an 02' SS M6 and a 01' WS6(which I am not a big fan of but it has an LS1 and its super clean) so what do you guys think?

Replies sometimes take a bit, just be patient.
LS1 motors can handle a respectable amount of boost on a stock setup. For me, the magic number would be about 8 PSI. Some people have run 9 or even 10 PSI, but to stay pretty safe I would stay 8 lbs. or under. Too much boost can eventually burn up the ringlands after a lot of wear n' tear.
A supercharger setup should always be fully dyno tuned IMO. I'm hoping/guessing that the appropriate fuel system mods were done in conjunction with the supercharger? What other mods are on the car. You say the car was only street tuned "due to the clutch"... that doesn't make much sense to me... what the heck does a clutch have to do with a dyno tune? Kinda odd to me.
How many miles on the car? Have you heard it run? How does it sound. How does it look? Even though its supercharged, you should still take note of everything you would when shopping for a normal sports car. The problem with a supercharged car is you can never know EXACTLY what you're getting into unless you tear that motor apart. But if it runs well, and was setup properly, it should last awhile.
I can't really comment on the other SS and WS6 unless you have more information about them.
Out of curiosity, why no love for the WS6? I used to be a Camaro only fan as well, until I saw the LS1 WS6 for the first time. The interior is quite nice and I think the cars look mean as hell. You wouldn't be dissappointed thats for sure.

After I took all the time deciding and talking with my credit union, man was I pizzed
I hear ya man, sounds pretty good. If you have the pics, post them up and we can take a look at them.
Check the exhaust for smoke, any rattling when you test drive it, take a look under the hood, look under the body, etc. stuff like that.
Sounds like you know what you're looking for. My best advice is to be patient. You don't wanna rush and find something you might like better when its too late.
Let us know how it goes!

Well I am gonna have to now, the only option I have now is the SC SS, but my credit union is really dumb when it comes to buying from a private party...They required the seller to release the title to them first then they issue a check-even though I am locked into the check because of the loan
The only real bad thing about buying used cars is you dont know how they have been taken care of and how hard they were drove. On the bright side that is low miles. If the previous owner put a supercharger on the car you can rest of sure he one thing on his mind and that is driving the car hard. I would look it over with a fine tooth comb and just dont look for the big things look for the little things. If you have any doubts about the car just be paitent. You will find the car for you. Best of luck on your decision.

Unless you are gettting a smokin' deal on the supercharged car, I would get the 01 or 02. The beauty of the LS1 is it's ability to make big power without a power adder. I have tried them all, and made it full circle back to naturally aspirated. Plus, when buying a used car, you are better of with an unmolested car, since issues will become more obvious.

Original clutch would be a good selling point IMO- it may not have much life left but it it's smooth it means the car has probably been treated fairly well. Other issues would be apparent w/a good test drive.
You'll need an aftermarket clutch or at least an LS2 flywheel/LS7 clutch setup.
Also, a supercharger on a stock motor is honestly a ticking time bomb. Think about it. 10.3:1 compression and boost........

Personally for me i would not consider buying an SC Camaro unless i knew the owner and how he took care of it. You just dont know if he ran too high of a boost and now has back it off and not now what type of damage he has caused to the motor. Also trying to figure out if he has changed the fuel pump, fuel injectors what kind of tune. Its just to many unknowns and spending money on a car im sure most of us would hate bringing it home and then having it parked making payments on it and it doesnt run. Either way be patient seems like your not really in a hurry and youll eventually find the right one.
I am in about the same situation. Only its a 2000 z28 with a s-trim supercharger, 76,000mi and the guy wants $5,000. I am not sure if I want it because of the supercharger he might have over ran the car and its a M6.

Though it might be in a C5 chassis
