pros and cons about slp 160* thermostat
#31
A 160 degree thermostat should NOT cause the motor to warm up slower, just reach a lower peak temperature. The idea is that the thermostat stays shut until it reaches the specified temp, then it opens. Then when the temp falls below the specified temp it shuts again. It repeats this cycle over and over.

Also, for what it's worth...when Car Craft did their late model engine tech article on the LS1 one of the first mods they recommended was a the cooler thermostat

From personal experience with 2 LS1 cars going almost 600 passes down the track. There is no advantage in running a LS1 lower than 175-180°. It will run no faster cold or cooler than that. And a warmed up engine will last longer under heavy abuse. Now if you let it get over 210° or so it will slow down a little.
The LS1 motor being all aluminum disperses heat differently than a cast iron motor. And therefore can't be treated the same.

I can agree with that. But how low?

Yea I agree, it does feel faster though.
And i'm definately not an expert but heat does = hp to a point. If its too hot, it will lose hp. I know that running a cold engine hard is bad, so heat preserves the engine. But too much heat is bad and can cause knock (detenation)
Oh, feel free to correct me as i'm still young and learning

Yes, heat = hp. BUT heat + crappy fuel = detonation.
Plus for A4 guys, heat = tranny death. Your fluid flows through the radiator, if your ECT is 200° then you lowest fluid temp is 200°. Which is getting pretty high.
I've seen maybe 1 mpg drop with a 160° stat (I really cant tell a diff). I've not seen a rich condition either, the PCM should be able to adapt if it does go a little rich.

Help me out here, my ride is in the shop for a new engine harness so now is the time to do this.
Would dropping a 160* stat with the fan kit in my 93' LT1 m6 help, hurt, or have no effect on over-heat and HP performance? Typically I drive only when its sunny out, a good freeway trip but sometimes get stuck in traffic - ever since I got it in 93', its been a fight to keep the temp down and the fans on sooner. Its never overheated per se, I've shut it down a few times because 240* is a bit high for my comfort zone (bad traffic, hot day).
I checked the link listed earlier so I plan on ordering the fan kit but thought about dropping in the 160* stat with a re-program anyway.
Thoughts? anyone? beuhuller?
