Problem w/ shifter

IWell I dont know if I can explain this well but here it goes. I was driving and noticed that the shift **** was loose. Well it turns out that it is not the shift *** loose, but the actual stick that the *** sits on top off. I can tell that it is rotating becase of the little curves in the stick. has anyone else had this problem, how did you fix it?

This is the stock "ball" shift **** right?

Sounds like the leather on the **** has come unglued. That happened on my '96, it felt like I felt like I was turning the **** but it was actually just the leather, the **** was still tight.

Um, buy a new shift ****...that's what I did.

I don't see anyway how the handle itself could rotate like your describing. It could come loose and you could move it back and forth, but you couldn't turn (rotate) it.

I agree with that. The design wouldnt allow it to rotate, only go back and forth, as in toward the front of your car to the back of your car.

No, trust me it is rotating. I know for a number of reason. First, i was shifting to second and heard a banging noise. The shaft was turned around because the notch that is supposed to turn towards the dash was facing the back of the car and so that had hit the plastic on the console and made a noise. Also I looked at it closely and pulled down the shifter boot. When I turned the **** the whole shaft was pivoting. Well maybey it is just time for a B&M ripper.

mayby a fix

I was looking at install university and I was looking at installing a short throw shifter. There appears to be two bolts that look like they hold the shifter shaft in place. I wll try to get a look at these tomarow and see if they need tightening.

I don't know what these other people are talking about but ya, it sounds like the whole shifter stick is loose. Just act as if you are doing a shifter install and get to those two bolts you speak of and check them out. If they are loose, put on some thread lock.

Also, you might want to pull on the stick straight up and see if it comes off, if it does, definitely those two bolts. Good Luck!

-Remove the coin holder in your console and remove the 2 7mm
bolts underneath it.

-Unscrew the shift ****

-Take out the ashtray and the little light under it.

-pull the console up and out

-Tighten the bolts holding your shifter stick onto the shifter base.
14mm I believe? Anyways, If one is missing (common that I've seen) find a bolt that will fit, otherwise really tighten the one bolt down. BUT BE SURE NOT TO PUT PRESSURE ON THE GEARBOX!!! HOLD THE STICK WHILE TIGHTENING THE BOLT! LET YOUR HAND TAKE THE PRESSURE!

Hope that takes care of your problem!!

While you're at it, install a Pro 5.0. A black anondized Z28 shift **** from Thunder Racing wouldn't hurt either ;-) check out the link in my sig to see it.

Well I had the chance to look at it this weekend. I took off the consol and everything. The shifter DOES spin around. There are actually no bolts of anything that hold your shifter stick in place. It seems that they use friction between the shifter shaft end and the socket it sticks into. Both are covered in rubber. I guess that mine got some sort of lubracant in it or something. So it looks like I have to buy a new one
