power steering fluid help!

could a bad color steering fluid start a screeching sound while turning the steering wheel from left to right

Not sure what the noise is from but mine had a grind *feel* to it that was getting more and more. When I used a hand pump to get all I could out of the resevoir and replaced with new Mobil 1 fluid I noticed that the steering was a lot smoother, like brand new.
