Question Ported MAF=lean=will throw code right?

I just ported my MAF using the write up from install university.
When I started the car I heard this loud clicking/tapping sound coming from the engine, but it went away after a few minutes. I know porting your MAF can cause your car to run lean, but won't this also throw a SES light? Car seems to run fine now.

I ran mine ported on both the Z28 and now the T/A ... never threw a code.

Recently, however, I put a set of stock ends (complete with screen) back on the T/A ... it was giving a ton of detonation at WOT.

Cool

Yes, ported MAF ends will lean the car out. I only recommend trying a set of ported ends if you have a dyno w/ a wideband O2 around. O2's aren't very accurate. Your car can be running lean and not throw a code. The LTrims must hit 25%+ before the SES will come on. The PCM can't adjust for rich or lean conditions past -25%/+25%, so that's why it throws the code. You say that the loud ticking was on start-up and went away after a few seconds of running. If it went away that fast, it was just your lifters filling with oil. They're loud until they pump up. If the loud ticking continues until the engine reaches full operating temp, then you have piston slap.

I ported my stock maf ends, works great, the car ran a little rough and idle was erratic for about 15-30 mins then it went away as the computer adjusted to the new air, which btw verifies that it is a big chnage in the amount of air you are getting into your motor, which means more HP...! It has not set any codes off. I recommend having a set of stock ends just in case though, I do. It seems not everyone has luck with this mod. I'm running great considering I just ran a 12.99 @110.2 , on the Tazzo, this past weekend, with a passenger (extra weight).

Your car isn't adjusting because you're getting so much more air. It's adjusting from the change in the air/fuel ratio. Ported MAF ends don't add HP because of the airflow. They add power because you get two degrees more timing at WOT and it leans the a/f ratio out. Even if it's not safe, leaning an engine out will make more HP. The diameter itself isn't restrictive for airflow until you get into 420+ RWHP.

Well Trevor if you want to get technical that's fine. Porting your maf ends will increase the "potential" air flow by approximately 43% (by removing the restrictive center airfoil in the maf ends). Yes it helps, and the timing air/fuel ratio is not the only story, the motor is now able to suck air easier, the power gain was easy to feel and with how well my car is running for my mods I'd say it is a great free mod. But then again you probably want me to buy the $300+ Granatelli maf..no thanks I'll stick with my free maf end mod, its great.
