Piston Slap Question.

Piston Slap Question.
I have an 02 in the signature that I bought this last summer, it currently has @ 25K on it. I have been waiting for some cool weather to see if I have the infamous piston slap. It has been in the mid 20s, low 30s over night here and the car is stored in a garage, but it can't be that much warmer in there. Anyway, the car doesn't seem to have it *cross fingers*
The question is:
Will piston slap "develop" over time, or is it you have piston slap from day one, or you don't have it at all?

Re: Piston Slap Question.
Some people get lucky and get an engine that does not have piston slap and others are not so lucky. From research I have done piston slap can develop with more miles as the TEFLON coating wares off the pistons skirts making the piston loose in the cylinder. Or you could just start out with an engine with over sized cylinder(s) to start with.
Read my thread labeled (Building a new LS1 engine) and read about the problems I am having with piston slap. I hope your lucky and you never have the problem.

Re: Piston Slap Question.
If you have piston slap, you'll be able to hear it when it's warm out too, just not as much as cold weather. Sounds like yours isn't a slapper at all. I wouldn't worry about it even if it did slap when cold.

Re: Piston Slap Question.
Mine has actually developed some minor piston slap in the last few months. Nothing too big, but I can definetely hear it when the engine is cold. My car currently has 65K miles.

Re: Piston Slap Question.
That pistonslap site is pretty weak. If you have some slap, it isn't the end of the world. The problem arises when you have persistent slapping or knocking noise after the car is warmed up. If you can hear it over the valvetrain once the car is fully warmed up, then I would be a little concerned... I had a 1989 GT that slapped, as well as a 440 Challenger. Neither gave be any issues... My 2000 Z28 makes a little noise when cold, but clears right up... 576/590 at the wheels and no issues on the stock bottom-end.
