Piston Slap: LS1 Block vs. LS6 Block
Piston Slap: LS1 Block vs. LS6 Block
QUOTE- So, if the only difference in the engine is intake and exhaust, why do so many Z28's and SS's have piston slap to some degree and you hardly ever hear of a C5 with piston slap?
This is a fine point, how come corvette LS1 engines are not plagued by piston slap?
Only a small percentage of 01 and 02 F- bodies got LS6 blocks and all Corvettes got them...do any of these cars (LS6 blocks) have piston slap?
My friend just got a 01 Vette and his LS1 engine has no piston slap what so ever. Does piston slap have anything to do w/ the LS6 block?

Many vette owners have been plagued with piston slap too. Truck owners as well. All Corvette's have the LS1 block just like the F-bodies with the exception of the Z06's. Now some F-bodies did come with the LS6 block between 2001 and 2002. My 2002 SS has an LS6 block and has some noise on a cold start that disappates soon after driving. My 2000 Z28 has an LS1 block and slaps for 10-15 mins after cold start and cold driving. It has to get all the way up to normal op temp to stop. Now some 2001+ Corvettes may have come with the LS6 block. That I don't know for sure. And I believe in 2003 ALL generation III aluminum small blocks (LS1's) are LS6 blocks.
I've driven 6 LS1's and been around more, and none of the them had any piston slap at any time. I know there are a good number out there with piston slap, but I have yet to come across one that does, truck or car.

ill say it again.its normal and harmless and most likely all ls1s have this in some form or another due to engine tolerances.
an engine designed to make this kind of power is going to have some noises.if you want quiet drive a corolla.

That is crap, I should'nt have to wait for my car to WARM UP when I live in a state where the average temp is above 80 degrees...I have to let my car WARM UP even if it is 100 degrees out...What's up w/ that?
And yet many LS1's and LS6's never experience this problem.
I know it is not that big of a deal, but it just ticks me off.
And further more, I will never drive a Corolla.

I don't think so. There are quite a few grumblings in the vette camp about piston slap. That in depth article (can't remember the name though) addressed piston slap and the oil siphonage of the ls1's featuring their installation in vettes.
You can believe I have that annoying noise as well. It is funny, it doesn't start until maybe 5 minutes, it lasts another 5 minutes, then it is quiet as a house mouse.
My oil economy is excellent though. Heck, as long as it hauls *ss I'm happy!

I guess I am fortunate that I do not have an oil consumption problem...knock on wood~~~
It is a GREAT engine, one of a kind. It also a GREAT attempt with the LS1 to make one of the best engines ever made...enter the LS2!
