Piston Slap

I am wanting to find out if anyone here in the forum has ever had there LS1 warranted for piston slap? And if so what did they do to fix it? I had mine warranted for piston slap about a week ago and they said they replaced the pistons with longer pistons. Has anyone here ever replaced there pistons on there own to fix piston slap? If so what did you have to do to fix it your self such as piston size or boring?

And did piston slap ever come back after a piston size change? Here is the part #88984245 for the pistons they used in my LS1. Are these the same pistons that are now being used in the 03 LS1 engines? Well if anyone else has received these pistons for piston slap repair let me know how they worked for you or if anyone has got a different piston than what I got let me know how it worked for you.

I am curious because it seems my piston slap problem is coming back again after only driving a few hundred miles!!!! It was quite at first and I thought it was fixed but now it is getting louder like it was before!! So if anyone has any info for me let me know please.

The added the exact ammount of oil required, I'm driving the car around for 1000 miles, and bringing it back. They will drain it, and see how much was consumed.

Since in another post, it said that like .946 qts/2000 miles was acceptable, anything over a half a quart I'm gonna bitch about.

So what is carbon treated? What do they do when the carbon treat a engine? And the dealer did say you had piston slap?

Also does anyone know anything about putting longer pistons in an engine with out changing the connecting rods? I would think you would have to put shorter rods in? Please help need all the info I can get.

Well from what i've heard as far as the piston replacement goes, they buy a new set of OEM pistons and measure them and the cylinder bores and use the larger piston in the bore that is larger (mostly cyl #1 and #2). And as far the warrante, I guess you are kinda lucky you got them replaced by Mr.Goodscrew!!! Most people just get blewoff by the dealer........kinda like I did but I fought back and the most they did was extend my warrante to 5 years 60,000mi. As far as it coming back yea I can believe that 100%, one reason it will is because that is obvously is not the best fix, it's just the fastest and cheapest way to do it, and i'm shure it will work for a in some cases but not all. I'm not even shure if I want them elbow deep in my motor!!!! Maybe this will force me to just go for a 383 stroker kit down the road Good luck

Well they did replace all 8 pistons in my engine atleast thats what they said and thats whats on the service invoice. And when I first took my car in to the dealer and I told him I think my car has piston slap he asked me if it was really loud and knocked when I first start it before I even got a chace to tell him my self! And then he said he hears it about 4 or 5 times a DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He said its been like that since 1998!!!!!!

And he said they could listen to it but he said it in a way that they wouldnt beable to do much about it. So i was very suprised when they said they would replace my pistons. So I guess my slap was worse than most. If I didnt let my car warm up at least 15 minutes my car would sound like a DIESEL going down the street. Even when it warmed up you could still hear it just not as bad.

Now its the same story all over again. Its not as loud now but the slap is still there. It sounds more like a 4 banger diesel now than like a V8 like it did before they replaced my pistons. Im going to drive a few hundred more miles and wait and see if it gets louder and then take it back to the dealer.

Ive heard about GM giving people extended warntees when people call complaining about piston slap. But thats not going to be good enough for me. Some people have even got GM to buy there vehicle back after taking them to court.

Check out this link. There is lots of info on piston slap. www.pistonslap.com

I have piston slap sometimes on cold starts. From my understanding it caused by the difference in materials causing them to expand differently. Never had piston slap after the car was warmed up though so I don't worry about it.
