What's the easiest way to remove the old bearing? I've got a clutch replacement side job coming up this weekend and I know I can't use the old newspaper trick that I'm familiar with.

 

The right tool with a slide hammer is the easiest way. Comes out in less than 60 seconds.

I couldn't find the right tool, so I rented the Autozone one (which was too big and we had to grind it down so it fit) along with their slide hammer. Hooked it up and it popped right out. Ended up costing me ~$30 because I 'altered' the tool and couldn't return it.

 

i've cut mine out 2x with a chisel...not fun.

there was noplace to get a slide hammer nearby.

the chisel works, but the hammer is more efficient.

 

I've got a slide hammer with all sorts of attachments and adapters, but nothing small enough that will work. I was just hoping of an easier way of removing it without resorting to cutting it and then chiseling out

 

Get someone else to do it.

 

Slide hammer. Also, get a can of compressed air, invert it, and freeze it. Makes it shrink a bit, and it slid out with like 3 strikes of the slide hammer.

 

IIRC from reading in car craft or some other rag, they said something about using wet toilet paper and a dowel rod that fits closely inside the PB. Put the wet TP inside the PB, push it in with the rod, repeat until the PB comes out. I've never tried it, but I'm curious if it works. Someone try it and report back

 

Not on an LS1 from what I understand. It is hollow with a plug. You will knock the plug out and regret it.
