overheating problem
overheating problem
had this problem going on for awhile but now that summers coming up I definently want to take care of it.
I have a 160* stat in it right now but stock fan settings. Before, the problem was that it didn't seem like the overflow was working. When I would park for a short while (5 minutes) and restart the temp would surge almost to red while the fans kicked in and eventually cooled it down. I had to put in coolant several times because it would run the radiator dry. I changed the cap and that definently had an effect since when I'd park it would surge out of the overflow. I figured it was air in the system so I drained everything and refilled it 50/50 by filling the radiator and then filling the overflow to the max cool level. I also added some of that additive stuff that is supposed to lower thetemp by 20* (whatever, just for the hell of it). Well, there's no overflow problem anymore and if I jump on the freeway when it's cold the gauge will probaly be at the 11 oclock area. ( I know that gauge is supposd to be a dummy for my year but it reads noticeably below 210) When I resume normal driving it goes to right below 210 with it going dead even with it sometimes when I sit for awhile. However, I got on it yesterday for about 5 minutes of hard driving and it climbed to about the 220-230 level by the time I stopped and it cooled down. Also, on hot days when I do the quick restart the temp will be a bit above normal. There's no dexcool in my oil last time I changed it ( about a month ago) and I don't go through any more than everyone else does (1 quart every 4-5k miles) so I don't think I have a blown head gasket. This problem has been going on for over 6 months. Any ideas?

Re: overheating problem
actually, it just Did it again tonight on a little freeway run. was doing about 100 in 4th for about a minute then went up to 135. after we stopped i was loping home and noticed the gauge at the high end of 12o clock. probaly on it for 3 minutes At most and its about 50° out. a stock car shouldn't be having this problem. what if you live in texas?
