Over-Drive?

I just bought a 2000 Camaro Z-28 2 Door Coupe as my first car, one quick question. When do I use the Over Drive gear? And Why?

Re: Over-Drive?

are you talking about an A4 or M6?

you use it for better gas milage at cruising speeds aka highway or freeway driving

Re: Over-Drive?

Oh, if it's an auto, i'd just always use it. There are times you want to disable it and just use drive, such as if you're going up a mountain. But i don't think it's that big of a problem

Re: Over-Drive?

Just leave it in the gear even when racing.

Re: Over-Drive?

leave it in OD...

let the computer figure out when to use it...after all...that's how it was designed

Re: Over-Drive?

I keep mine in D from 0-65mph and city driving, highway speeds it goes into OD. I just don't like idleling all over town because it sounds like my engine is working harder to maintain that minimal speed at such low RPM.

Re: Over-Drive?

The only reason to keep your car in D is if you are at the track. Thats it. Im surprised how much this gets asked.. lol

I'm with you bro!

Also, if you're in stop-and-go traffic a lot, it's just another wasted shift, and it's going back and forth from 3rd to 4th to 3rd, etc. In and among, the converter will also lock up (even in 3rd) so for the "fuel savings" in those conditions, I leave it in 3rd and save the tranny from too many unnecessary shifts .

BUT, the average driver puts it in OD (4th) and leaves it there, and there's really nothing wrong with that either .
