Which one will I see more gains with? LS6 Intake vs Ported 853 Heads

Alright, should I go with the LS6 Intake on my 98 LS1? or the Ported 853 Heads?

Currently I have a 98 LS1 from a SS Camaro in my 96, its a M6 setup, current mods are below. Just wanted to see from which I would see more gains from. Not sure how well a set of ported 853's would flow but hopefully they would flow pretty good. Does anyone think they would flow like LS6 heads? The heads were milled a little I think to raise the compression. My car has the stock 806 castings which I heard, stink.

Any well ported LS1 heads will out flow stock LS6 heads by a bunch.

You will gain the most with the heads but the intake will increase your hp a lot when added to the ported heads. Just keep in mind that you'll need new tappet covers and coil mounts.

And get that RP junk oil out of there.

Don't waste your time, you will gain more from a cam on stock heads than you would with heads on a stock cam. You're going to want at least an LS6 intake either way though.

RP isnt junk lol. I understand the LS6 intake would probably give me more gains in the short run but heads will give me more gains in the long run. Either way, if you have heads the intake will restrict you, if you have an intake the heads will restrict you, if you have all of those, the tb will restrict you.

A cam-swap will make more power than either of those.

I'd get an LS6 intake manifold first if you are only picking between the intake manifold or the heads.

Hey Mike

Until your ready to replace the cam I would leave the heads alone. The intake would be your best bet now as the heads are worthless without a better cam, and once you install the heads/cam your gonna need a better intake anyway.

LS6 intake with ported TB is my vote for the first mod.

I know on these engines you have to pull the heads to install lifters, but I thought you didnt have to pull the heads to put in a cam. Thought the lifter trays kept the lifters from falling down into the lifter bore. Correct me if im wrong.

How much would a set of ported 853 heads sell for?

No, you don't have to pull the heads to install a cam.

No idea how much they would sell for. It depends on how much they are worked and who did them.... Anywhere from $300-1000.

Ported 853 heads don't tend to go for much $ unless they've been worked by someone like GTP or MTI.
