Angry oil in LS1

Hi Everyone,

It was 1000 miles ago when I had my oil changed by Shell gas station near my house. I checked my dipstick the other day and it now has about 1/3 left between where the top of the line is where you can fill it too and where it says ADD. I need to top this off now and I don't know what kind of oil they used. What should I put in there and can I do this while the engine is cold ( add a little at a time until it gets the the top)?? Thanks

I check mne by the manual the car came with, let the car run a while, turn it off for a few minutes so the oil can drain back to the pan, then check it. I am also having problems with my oil, it said that i needed to add 1 qt so i did and all is fine, but i have found no evidence of oil leaking anywhere. I hope it is nothin gmajor

I would assume they use there shell brand of oil. Most likely it would be there 5W-30. I would go back to that gas station and ask what kind of oil they use to be sure.

That's it. Some leak a lot, some alittle. It's no big deal unless you're adding more then a qt between changes.

all ls1's burn oil the more you hammer on it the more it drinks it is the gay as egr on these things. nothing wrong with your engine although i do suggest you start using synthetic oil and chenging it yourself.

None of them leak oil, that would be a problem. They burn a little oil though when you get on it. I just got my LS1 and I am going to change my oil this week and I will see what happens.

Meant to say "burn", not leak. Yeah that would definitely be a big problem.

Hey thats a little price you guys have to pay for having 300rwhp stock. Big deal you have to add a qt between oil changes. Just a design flaw no big deal. Stop crying.

There is a TSB regarding the LS1 oil consumption. I believe it is due to ring tension. There's a blurb about it in this months Chevy High Performance Magazine

Lightbulb Yes, you can mix.

Most Syn oil labels that I have seen mention how they are fully compatible w/ dino oils.

No problem.

My '99 SS burns about a 1/2 qt every 3K.

Since our cars hold 5.5 qts, what woould you do w/ the other 1/2 qt from the oil change anyway ?

I think GM specs are that if it is using a qt or more every 500 miles, there is a problem.

Oh, is your a M6 ? Apparently they tend to use more oil than an A4 - depending upon driving style.

Try a new PCV valve. Some of these were bad, and a new one may help or correct the oil consumption. But most of the time LS1's will burn some oil because of ring tension. This is no design flaw. By letting a little oil get past the oil ring, it serves to offer some extra lubrication. Ford reportedly did this on the HO 5.0's on the fox body stangs.
