oil drain plug wont budge
i was trying to change the oil on my 98 formula tonite but i cant seem to get the damn oil drain plug to budge. any suggestions? (and yes i done it before tons of times on my 2000 T/A and my moms and sisters cars). thanks
Ditto, had to slip a breaker bar that I made from a piece of pipe I had laying around to get more leverage, otherwise it wouldn't budge.Tried not tightening as hard after that but I've needed the breaker bar every time anyway.A mechanic friend told me it has something to do with the oil pan being cast aluminum instead of steel & the steel drain bolt expand & contract at different rates.
Try taking a 1/2" ratchet w/ the appropraite socket and tap the ratchet (solidly) w/ a hammer in the direction you want to go w/ the ratchet.
The idea here is that sometimes vibration is a better tool than force.
Kinda the same principle as w/ an air ratchet.
Mine was dam tight, too the first go round - these plugs don't take much torque due to the o-ring seal (like 15 foot lbs, I
think) so I have gotten into the habit of just snugging mine up , plus a wee bit.
Good Luck !
