Oil and diff fluid

need some help. I'm about to switch over to synthetic Mobil 1, but i need to know what oil filter i should get. A buddy recomended the K&N extended filter or else the AC-Delco extended, but i dont know the part numbers. Also what is the best differential fluid to go with since I'll doing that at the same time. My car is an 02' Z. Thanks for the help

Don't go with a fancy filter, just get the AC delco for the '01 silverado. It's a little bit longer, and works great.

i only put the best in my car. Maybe there is no difference that i'll ever be able to tell, but it's only a few bucks more, so why not?

Just my .02, but I also put in this stuff called X-1R. You can get it at walmart for $13. My dad puts this stuff in his C5, and has told me to try it. I usually burn a half quart over a 2 week period. Well, I put some in before I drove a total of 3k miles to Florida for vacation and back. I kid you not, I did not burn hardly any oil on that trip. I took a quart with me just in case, but each time I checked the oil, it was at or near the top of the full line.

Oil wise go with Mobile 1 Synthetic. I used Amsoil, and prefer it, but it's a hassle for me to get it from my friend all the time. So I get it at Walmart. A mobile1 or AC delco filter will suffice.

if you want amsoil, email me about it.. i can get it for ya.. its all i use and I perfer it just because its less of a hassel for me to go out shopping for oil.. I would rather it be like amsoil and have the oil at my door stop.

Now filter wise, I use an amsoil filter. Amsoil makes the longest filter i know of for our cars but its so long that I dont recommend it at all.. Its long enough that its almost as low as the cat thats next to it.. and since its before it, it isnt sheilded at all!

I ran it for about 3 days just to mess with it.. then I went back to the standard size filters. I havent found that the filters are going to give me any more protection based on their size so I dont worry about them.

I dont burn oil tho.. But my car is still pretty new at 18K miles.. hehe and I dont rag on it.

I have changed all of my fluids in my car to amsoil for the fluid change and dyno session I did earlier this year. (in my sig)
There was no gain to be seen. If you have any questions about amsoil stuff, I still have the containers so I can tell you what I used. *It may be in the review part as well..

I wouldnt waste my $ on anything K&N.. But thats my opinion
hehe

Not saying this oil is not good,I may take a look at it(concider using for a change once).

But as for oil consumtion, its not the oil being used in the car that determines the consumtion.
The fact that you have a M6 and your burning 1/2 quart in 2 weeks.Has to do with your driving the M6 around town.If you are goosing it,reving gears up before shifts and you know "using your car for it's full potential". This type of driving causes the piston rings to do something called "flutter" in the overbore cylinders. And is a direct influence on the consumtion of oil not the oil being used(normal).
On extended drives as you described this condition of flutter is substantially reduced b/c of the cruizing condition not stop&go town drivin...in which the rings settle in and form a more positive seal from the long periods of constant smooth rpms while cruizing.Making the oil consumtion minimal b/c of the conitions of the driving.
This is what you saw in your case difference in drive conditions. Not the type of oil.

Copeland these filters they recomend are good,I use one by Hastings.Supposed to be good havent seen a study on it yet.
But next time I'm using the K&N.But wont go extended with it either. I used Red Line synthetic 75W-90 gear oil in my differential, maintanence schedule for diff. is 7,500 miles so its time I also put Red Line D4 synthetic ATF in the tranny and boy is it smoother after heated up.

My buddy has an amsoil account. I get it for $4.60 a quart, not too shabby. Plus I use their filters. I don't know what size cabboage uses, but mine is the same size as stock and doesnt hang low. Reason I went with mobil1 is that I didn't want to deal with the shipping charges, and I didn't want to wait for it to come in. So I'm a cheap impatient bastard. As for the tranny, I put in Royal Purple MAX ATF, and it runs pretty smooth. My car has 25K on it, and I bought it used. I'm pretty sure the person that had it before me drove it pretty hard. It had a rear pinion seal leaking, and I think I had some oil on a plug when I was changing plugs. I had the seal replaced under warranty. So whatever fluid they put back in is what's in it. I have no idea.

psychocabbage, how many miles have you put on your car since you started running amsoil ?? I am seriously thinking about switching over to it but my main question is how many miles have you put on it ?? And Was it dirty like most other oils after about 1500 - 3000 miles ?? I understand that amsoil does not break down like Conventional Oil or other semi-synthetic oils do, but I am kind of leary because I don't want to run Dirty oil through either my car or truck...

Thanks,

Charlie

I know you directed this question to psychocabbage, but I just changed my oil last weekend after running Amsoil. I put 4,500 miles on it and when I drained it, it still had a slight honey color to it. It was dirty never the less, but that's inevitable. I was pretty impressed. Reason I didn't put Amsoil back in was that it needed to be changed, and I didn't want to wait another week for it to come in on order. I heard Mobil 1 synthetic is a true synthetic as well. They use a pure base, from what I've heard, I could be wrong.

7500+ miles from one oil change to the other.. Oil was black as expected.

I dont expect the oil to be "super oil" I just expect synthetic oil to allow me to extend my change intervals from 3000 miles to the factory recommended 7500. If I am paying that much more for the oil, I should just go ahead and get the extra mileage out of it.

I feel that there is enough technology out there in the lubricants that allows me to do so without worry. (I used to be a religious 3000mile oil change person.. but that would be every month and a half for me)

Just so you know... Amsoil has a kit you can install.. It filters all of your motor oil every 5 min.. Used in big rigs, but can also be used in cars, it will keep your oil dirt and contamination free almost indefinately. Its pretty neat. But I am not into adding two huge filters to my engine bay. Nor would I want the extra weight. heh

Thanks for the info from both psychocabbage and KungFu. That is interesting to hear that neither of you actually ran the oil as long as Amsoil's website said just change the filter every 6 months and change the oil Once a year.. Well it is good to know that since it does get dirty, I would change it ever 3000 - 5000 miles personally...

Thanks again,

Charlie

I dont think I could put that much faith into a filter. heheh
Now the filter kit i mentioned.. yeah.. I can see that it would leave your oil in its original honey colored state.. but otherwise.. NO way.. hehe 7500 miles is good for me. its what the car asks for so its what I will do.. Saves me some $ since I dont spend too much on the oil and am getting more miles out of it.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I ended up going with Mobil 1 for the engine and Amsoil for the rear. The difference was amazing...no more chatter in the rear and the noise level dropped dramatically. I've seen some people saying that with synthetics, you can go mush longer in between changes, but i think i'll stick with my 3000 mile routine. I paid enough for the car so i might as well spend the extra to keep all the fluids clean and new. Thanks again for the help
