Odd Manual Transmission 'Problems' - Opinions?
The more I read, the more ticked off I get at the service dept. at my local Chevy dealership. I took my 2002 M6 Z28 in for similar problems - won't go into first or reverse from a stop without going into another gear first. I was told this was because there are no synchros for first and reverse and that the resistance to shift into any gear from neutral could be attributed to the fact that it is a close ratio transmission. I haven't had time to go through my service manual yet, but I know it has info on synchros for first and reverse. Gotta get my info ready before I go back to GM.
i'll try to get the full scoop on what they end up doing to my car and will pass it on. At first I was told it was the "close" shift pattern that was the problem-but I never believed that and told them so.
I hope to hear in the next two days what their plan of attack is.

GM is shipping a full clutch/pressure plate/throw out bearing and fork for replacement as a unit on the car. (I still think its the tranny that has the problem.
Once installed (hopefully tomorrow) will road test etc. If still not right then they plan to open up the tranny.

Hey olsen, do you notice any kind of performance decrease with your car (compared to another camaros you have possibly been in, either with the hurst shifter or regular shifter)
In my experience, i have found that the hurst shifter equipped ones are a little slower than the regular ones... hmm
well, nothin that some 3.73's cant fix!

My preivous Camaro was a 5 speed so its difficult to make that comparison. In my case the Hurst is shifting so poorly you really can't say what the comparison would be like.
Too many variables between years. You need to get side by side and drive both to really tell.

Olson, humor me if you will after reading some of your posts.I feel the need to find out if you know about skip shift or CAGS.
Not saying theres nothin wrong w/ your tranny just curious
I havent had any probs w/mine yet other than hearing 1st gear momentarillyon slow take offs.
Copland maybe just the play in the trans combined w/ play in rear could cause clunk.

I think CAGS stands for Computer Aided Gear Selection. If not, well it's the same thing. They might just use a different word that starts with the same letter. When accelerating slowly from a stop in 1st gear you'll see a dash light come on saying "skip shift" and you can only shift into 4th gear. You can disable this feature by installing a "skip shift eliminator" device. They usually run about $30 and simply plug into the wire harness next to the transmission. It's basically just a resistor that is added between the transmission and the computer. You can make one for a dollar or buy a nice finished product for $30 that you won't have any problems with.

I get the skip shift light occassionaly in first but have ignored it. If I go high enough on the rpm the light goes out. My problem is in the actual movement of the shifter between gears. Even in neutral in a standing position there is problems in movement between the gears.
Thanks for the eliminator information. I will spend the $30 to take care of that as well.
The higher the RPMS in any gear the harder it shifts also on the downshifting its a tough throw through two distinct metal to metal binding to downshift to the next lowest gear.

Olsen, My local chevy dealer said that my problem of having trouble shifting into first and reverse was also due to an incorrect clutch/flywheel adjustment (not just because it is a close ratio tranny and there are no synchros for 1st and rev.)
So I supposedly got a new clutch but my paperwork says I got a new flywheel. Just one other thing I'm going to have to discuss with them when I go back. I forgot to mention this in my previous post and seeing your last reply reminded me of it. Just wanted to pass it along. And yes the problem still exists.

I'm an old motorhead from the early days so I will let you know my experiences. On the hard to get into first issue this is my experience:this has happened to my several times with several makes and years of cars.I can't say about the cars mentioned here but I have had the same problem with most of them on an occasional basis( not all the time or most of the time).I can almost always get my 02 SS to go in first but when it won't all I do is go from 2-3-4 then back to first, this lines up everything and has always worked for me.Next, the comment on hard to shift through gears issue.I have had 4,5 and 6 speed cars and this is what I learned after a 98 Z-28 6-speed and now my 02 SS 6-speed.I have the Lou's short stick and like the feel better and it is mounted on the Hurst short throw shifter. To get the best shifts always remember to pull slightly left for the 1-2 shift, the 2-3 shift push the shifter forward but DO NOT push to the right,it is spring loaded to go to the 3/4 position anyway,if you try to push to the right to hit 3 it can jam or you can miss the gear,3-4 is no problem and I would guess the race should be over with by then anyway. I hope this helps and these are just my experiences, good luck.
