Re: Octane

Less power, your computer will sense knock and default back to a spark table that has less advance. Won't hurt it, but will reduce your power some. How much IDK.

Re: Octane

that's definitely not good. I figured since it was 1 octane less than recommended it wouldnt change anything.

Re: Octane

It'll perform like poo poo. These motors are well over 10:1 from the factory and using anything less than premium is a bad idea.

Re: Octane

maybe theres a difference over the years, but my mnual says it needs 91+ for best performance, but it can handle as low as 87 with reduced power. anything under, it says youll get knocking, so id never use less than 89 no matter what.

They WILL run OK. But is OK good enough for you? With reduced octane the computer will sense tiny amounts of knock long before you'll ever hear it and pull timing 'till the knock is gone. With reduced timing you also get reduced power. If you don't care that your 350ish hp car is only putting out 320ish hp so that you can save $1.50 a fill up then keep running the low octane fuel. And the hotter the weather the worse this effect gets.

haha, definitely fair enough. my car only had under ~90 octane for the first day of me driving it. moved up from a 130hp car, so its very possible that it was performing like crap, and id still think it was amazing

Re: Octane

I would think that you will get better mileage with the 91-93, therefore you would actually save money by running it over running 87-89. Besides, it is not oworth saving $3 a week if your V8 car runs like crap.
