difference in octane

Okay, I'm trying to win an argument on the difference in octane and it's purpose. First of all, I have no idea why I'm arguing with this guy about this, I guess we have nothing better to do at work. Anyway, I explained to him that the main reason for higher octane is to achieve a longer burn in the cylinders. Hense, having the fuel burn the entire length of the stroke. As with a lower octane, you only have a short burst (flash explosion) instead of a longer burn. Now, the question of the flashpoint. It makes sense to me that a higher octane would have a lower flashpoint in order to have the extended burn and vise versa with a lower octane having a higher flashpoint. Tell me if this makes sense and if I'm correct. I just might win some $$$ on this one. Even if I'm wrong, tell me I'm right...... Just kidding.
