O2 reading Oxygen below threshold in Cat
Hey Guys,
Can someone help me out?
I have a 2000 Z28 totally stock with about 70k miles on it. Sadly, my "check engine light" popped on. I connected it up to a diagnostic box I rented from a local part store. It returned error P0420 - Oxygen level is under threshold in catalytic converter.
Known issues w/ my car...
- It has a small oil leak that I have not had checked out yet.
- The dealership replaced the catalytic converter twice in the first 50k miles on the car. They simply stated the cat's went bad... and did no further diagnosis as to what could have caused it.
It was suggested that my car is probably running to lean or rich and thus burning things out by a friend, but he is into VW's and doesn't know a thing about Chevys.
I can't really troubleshoot cars and I do not want to get ripped off by the dealership. I can replace things and do simple repairs if I know exactly what to replace.
I was hoping some one on here had similar problems with their Camaro and could give me some good suggestions. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sky

Re: O2 reading Oxygen below threshold in Cat
I've had friends with P0420 codes and dealer replaced the driver's side cat free under the 8yr/80K federal emissions warranty. Everything's been fine after replacement. Dealer should replace it free, again...fairly common for the driver's side cat to go for some reason...understand your concern...since this is the third time I'd think the dealer should check further into the cause of the failures. Welcome to the board.
