need some basic mod info on a ls1

my buddy needs some help decided what mods should be done to his 2002 ls1
only mods are kn filter, and straight pipe in place of the muffler.
1. will a lid be beneficial over the stock Ws6 ram air with KN filter?
2. how much rwhp will a set of longtubes get?
3. which headers are the best performance wise?

he plans on 4.10 gears and drag radials (M6) also

i dont know much about the ls1, im more of an LT1 guy

thanks
jesse

A new lid will deffinitly help out. As far as headers go I luv my new slp longtubes. I havent dynoed my car yet with the newe longtubes but it feels like I got a nice powergain maybe around 15-20rwhp

I'd say SLP and FLP long tubes are probably the best. You'd most likely see a gain of around 15 rwhp with the headers and more if you got the car tuned after that.

he wants to go with an off road y pipe, is the LS1 the same as the 96-97 lt1, you will need 02 sims or a pcm reprogram to get rid of the SES right?

does the 02 ls1 have AIR? EGR?
which longtubes have these provisions?
1 3/4?
1 7/8?

He will need to get sims or have the o2's tuned out. '02's have AIR but no EGR. Any of the headers mentioned will allow hookup of the emissions but if he is going with an orp he might as well get off road headers too. As far as primary size goes IDK. If he is looking for good performance/price ratio the pacesetters are hard to beat at about $250 painted black they're hard to beat.

Both are a pina if that is what you mean

I like Hooker LTs the best but Pacesetters are soooo cheap.

Lots of people have had clearance issues with SLP headers. I would have your friend look at kooks or flp headers if money is no object. If he's on a budget then tell him to look at Pacesetter or the new inexpensive header on the block flow tech. They are made by a sister company of Hooker and look exactly like hooker LT headers. Just as good of a price as pacesetter with possibly a better fit.

They sell the flow techs at speed inc and the first shipments will be distributed this week I think. I can't wait to get some user feedback on these and see if they will be the new budget header of choice.

Good Luck

LTs on an LS1 are pretty easy. I did mine in about 6 hours, with help from a friend. I have done it on my LT1 and my LS1 and the LS1 is WAYYYYYYYYYYY easier. LT1 took me 3 days by myself!

By the way this was with Jet-Hots on the LT1 and Hookers on the LS1. Same thing basically. Tell your friend to check out the Jet Hot headers. I loved em on my 97 T/A.
