Need some advice, please???

Hi Guys.

I just took my 2001 SS to the dealer to have the rear end looked at because of an awful "kicking up rocks" sound it was making. Well, turns out they said my rear end has metal chunks everywhere. They said they have to rebuild the whole rear end to the tune of $2300 (I'm out of warranty with 47.000 miles). My question is, should I let them rebuild it and have the warranty, or should I buy a stronger rear end (moser or whatever) and put it in. My uncle is a very good mechanic and we're very capable of installing the rear end ourselves. Just curious for some opinion.

Thanks,
Ed

If you gotta spend the money anyway, get a 9" or 12 bolt with a different set of gears. No reason to let them rebuilt a 10 bolt for the same price as a brand new and much stronger rear.

Yeah, I told them that was an outrageous price and that I could get a stronger rear for that much. They said they wouldn't even get a stronger rear and put it in for me. It has to be what GM put in it.

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably just have it towed back home and order a new rear in a littlw while.

I'm not sure how it got ruined. I mean, yeah I race and get on it, but only once in a while. Just one day it started making that awful clunking sound on my way home from work.

One other thing, would you recommend a 12 bolt or 9"? Moser or someone else?

Thanks Guys,
Ed

Definatly go with a 12 bolt. You can find one for cheaper than what they quoted you for a stock 10 bolt.

Welcome to the board. Don't you just love it when GM wants to cram it in you a little deeper? Like a sorry rear end wasn't enough they would like to overcharge you for another POS. Check out this GP sale in the GP section. Good prices if they get enough intrest.

Now you just need to decide on which gears.
