Name that smell ...

Pulled into the garage yesterday and noticed a strange smell like burning plastic. Noticed it again on the road today coming though the air vents. The smell is coming from the engine bay. Had a look under the hood but didn't notice anything other than my power steering fluid is very low.

Any ideas what this could be and if it is worth taking to the mechanic?

TIA

Only get the smell when the A/C has been running. Still does it. Mechanic said something about a wheel that is used in the AC system that could be slipping and causing the plastic to burn. I'm still living with it now that its no longer A/C season.

It's baaaack .. and now it's accompanied by a chirping noise from the engine bay while idling. Think it could be a belt?

Difference is now I'm not even using the A/C.

Take the belt off and spin the accessory pulleys by hand.
