my z28 is fine

51,000 miles on my 98 Z and thanks to reading most the posts in here I have avoided many problems, WELL, I can not find info like in here for my truck (chevy silverado z71 5.3L V8) so I figure what the heck:

supposedly GM says I need a new "yolk", something where the drive shaft meets the transmission....NEVER heard of such a thing. I don't expect much as this camaroz28.com but any ideas would be apreciated, thNKS........

It goes on the driveshaft end closest to the transmission, and slides over the output shaft. Is it a recall/TSB or did you take it in for service?

The link below is to a good forum with very helpful people. The only thing is, the format of the page sucks (you'll see when you get there). I own a 97 z71 and it has come in very handy.

There is also a forum at www.pickuptruck.com

As for your problem, did you bring it in or did they issue a recall. Many people have and probably still are complaining about the popping noise that some trucks will make when starting from a stop. I had this problem and many trucks (of all makes) have it. The problem is that the output shaft is supposed to slide in and out of the yoke to compensate for changes in driveline length caused by suspension travel. Well the two pieces bind when come to a stop (rear of truck comes up when slowing down to stop). Then when you accelerate the rear end squats down causing the yoke and shaft to break the bind they were put in and you get a pop or thud. The quickest fix is a special GM greas that goes on there. A search at the forums above will give you the part number. My ultimate fix was different. I took the drive shaft out and filed down (with a dremel tool) the sharp edges on at the end of the splines on both the yoke and output shaft. My problem solved. What the Dealers are dowing is yet another option. They are replacing the yoke with a nickel coated one to make it smoother and less likely to bind. Let me know if you need further info on this.

Thanks

mmanss you know what your talking about, I went ahead and let the dealer replace the yoke with a nickel plated one and my Z71 is running great again.

thanks for putting up with a non LS1 post and allowing me to learn about another thing that can go bad on vehicles!

hopefully I can utilize the links you all gave me but the info I got here was fast and very helpful........
