Re: My sad story

ya I'd get the 373 gears, afterall you do have an overdrive tranny. I ran 410s with the same tranny and it sucked on the expressway, just because It was so loud with the rpms turning so high , then i went with 373 and it wasn't bad at all, you might have to drive slightl slower to keep the same gas mileage, and its not really that bad anyway, and the fun factor is worth it. You mentoned something about a peg leg rear-which is an open differental where only onewheel spins. I believe all Lt1 rears are posi traction-two wheel appeal, Someone else will chime in on that one. Either way, its going to cost alot of money you might have to get a new carrier for the new gears as well, but many shops charge at least 600 bucks. I would either wait until you find one used in the paper with hte gears you want or just get a 12 bolt, so you know it lasts. The stall convertor is easy to install yourself, just unbolt the tranny and stick it in. No need to pay someone for that, and it will make a huge difference. If it were me Id leave it all stock and get one of those rear mounted turbos, which would be great with those stock gears you already have. I also have a cheap rear I'd sell you from the Detroit area, came out of my 95 with 342 gears

Something's wrong with your car, or how you drive. Tune up is in order..

I drive a Bone stock 98 LS1. I've got 18's with some garbage tires.

I can run away from my buddy from 2nd gear on. He's got the following

96 LT1, m6, Drag Radials, Hypertech, Short Shifter, Intake, Cutout.

From a launch, he pulls 1/2 a car, but after I hit second, I run away from him...

Just my .02 cents

Yep, there is something wrong with your car. You should definitely be able to beat a stock LT1. Scan for codes to make sure you don't have bad 02 sensors or even a clogged cat, do a tuneup (plugs, wires, fuel filter, PCV valve) if you haven't done so, and run a can of GM Top Engine Cleaner (basically Seafoam) through.

Re: My sad story

I love all the ls1 owners that think the lt1 is junk.. i have won several of those peoples money with my lt1. I have seen several ls1's run high 13's low 14's stock.. Not all of them are low 13 sec cars out of the box. I have seen several high 13 sec lt1's. It is very possbile for a stock lt1 to beat a stock ls1, just doesn't happen that often cause there aren't many fast stock lt1's and not many slow ls1's. My 93 stock ran a 13.9x and my 00 ran a 13.2x.. my 00 would kill my 93. Just don't get that attitude that there is no way a stock lt1 can be a stock ls1..

lmao, speaking of that honda thing, i saw a ws6 m6 w/ headers, intake, and a lid get SPANKED by a geo metro, anything's possible, as for gears, if it's a 4 speed, go w/ a 3.73 i have a ws6 that gets upwards of 25 mpg on the hiway and doesnt drop much in the city, they're not that tall of a gear..and as for your buddy, he's obviously not telling u that he replaced his cam or something..lol, good luck beating an LT1

Re: My sad story

My friend is definately one to sneak a small mod under his hood and not tell me. But I gotta give his car some credit, it is badass out of the gate, I know because I drove it before he got it. The bad thing is this guy just got full exhaust (BBK Headers and Borla cat back; but he's not running cats). He also has alot of cash saved up and he is about to install an eaton posi unit with 3.42 gears and have his engine stroked to the tune of 383. So I gotta kick his *** before January. Thanks for all the input guys.

Hmmm.....headers, ~3500 stall converter, 3.73's or 4.10's, drag radials (or ET Streets) and maybe a camshaft if you're feeling extra greedy, and he'll need more than just a 383 to touch your car still!!

Or just a stall and N2O . Hell, you'll need a cage in your car before you know it!!

Re: My sad story

i have a 98 Z with 273s and i went 13.69 @ 103 with only a flowmaster muffler and a K&N filter. nothing to brag about but should be able to beat an LT1.

273s are awesome on the highway especially if you are going at it with another car. i now have LT's and they make a huge difference but, before i did those, i bought the SSRA and a Lid. definately helps the car breathe better.

look into some "basic" mods that you can bolt on your self, you should be ok

Re: My sad story

First of all, you need that thing to breathe. Here's how you mod order should go: free mods -> lid -> cutout -> drag radials -> SFC's & LCA's -> LT's and ORY-pipe -> 3500-4000 stall w/ cooler -> gears -> LS6 intake -> ported TB (do it yourself or have someone else do it)

All of the above shouldn't cost much more than $3000 if you do everything yourself. Nothings really difficult except for the converter and gears (only things I didn't do myself)

Don't forget to do some weight reduction along the way, this is VERY important. I didn't want to turn my car into a shell, but I still managed to drop 200 lbs in race trim.

Re: My sad story

Any ideas of how i can drop some unneccessary weight in my car, I don't want it to be like a race car, this is my daily driver, so needless to say i gotta keep my ac etc. However, don't get me wrong i want my car to be very fast.

Good list. Only thing that I'd change is I'd do the stall before the Lts & Y. Because in actual difficulty to install they are the same (many are scared of pulling the trans but it isn't really a tough job at all) In price they can be the same. But in straight line performance there is no comparison. 2 to 2.5 tenths for the headers and 5 to 8 tenths for the converter.

Re: My sad story

Hey you LT-1 haters, i had a 95 Firehawk with a BFG Drag Radial, K&N, airfoil, hypertech chip, hollowed cats, car ran 13.3's at 107.

The guy wanting to beat his buddy buy somew tire and the juice and whoop his *** good so good he may not come back looking for trouble after his build up! Cause it is gonna take him a built 383 to come close!
