I would try the second gear start and see how that works..... but i'm not 100% shure if the 99's have this feature, I know my 02 has it

Or do you just put the lever in 2nd? SGS the button is not on the 99s (or any V8 that I know of). I thought only the V6s got that and its not the greatest form of traction control, you can still loose control.

i think he was referring to the post that told me to "put it in 2 instead of drive"...even though my car will start off in 1st, and than shift to second, if i manually select "2"...yea..in my owners manual, the SGS says "V6 only", so i dont think they put that on any V8's any other years either
dude, even my V6 has spun out on me, the key is good tires.
What also helps sometimes is the second gear start, next time you go to accleerate, shift your lever into 2nd gear, your car might have it.

my car does not have "Second gear start" as in the button, that you push to start off in second gear for extra traction...I can however select 2nd gear manually with the shift lever..i can put it in 1,2,D,OD....but if i put it in 2 manually...the car still starts off in 1st gear, than shifts into 2nd..when i stop again..same thing, starts off in 1, than will shift to 2nd....

My factory GSC had some tread on them but they felt like an elephant on ice skates, I had a death grip on the wheel every time I drove in the rain, my new Dunlop sp5000 ( I think) were like night and day, I could relax, although they are wearing down now.
I try to avoid rain driving, for the most part I havent driven this car in the rain in a while.
good luck though.

Give it a really small amount of gas while in 1st so it will shift to 2nd as quickly as possible. Something like an upshift at 1400 rpm (that is when I shift my 6-speed out of 1st in the rain).
Get the firehawk tires, I have some on order, and my dad has them on his 00 WS6, you can't even tell you are driving in the rain on the firehawks. I can give it 3/4 pedal in 1 st gear in the rain and they hold traction in the WS6 (M6).

well gloveperson, i think traction control is tcs in the firebirds, t/a's etc. and asr is for camaros
but, i think even if you have the lever in 1 in an auto, it will still shift to 2
atleast in mine, that's the case
just so you wouldn't fry anything
and be careful, because atleast in my manual, it says like don't do more than 5 miles or so of driving in 2 (or 1 for that matter) because it'll fry the clutch packs (?) that it engages when you select them

As for the original topic: you say when putting it in second your car still starts in first, looks like your only options are to be even more gentle with the gas and look into getting better tires.
