Muffler --> catback or just cutout?
Muffler --> catback or just cutout?
A friend of mine has a 2000 TA that came with a muffler only exhaust. It sounds good, but I think he would like a little more performance or sound out of it. I told him he would be better off with just an electric cutout instead of going for a new catback system, such as a loudmouth. What are you LS1 guy's opinions?
I had a cutout, it sounded BAD ***. I like it, but it made the interior rattle. I left the cutout ucapped the majority of the time but after awhile it got old and i ended up getting the catback that was suppose to sound the closest to a cutout, and it does w/o the rattle. YOu cant beat a cutout for bang for thebuck hp though, it added 6hp on a dyno over the flowmaster catback i had at the time. My advice it to Get some long tube headers, off road ypipe, and a catback of your choice just get the one YOU think you will be happy with.
If i was to ever get a muffler style exhaust it would be the corsa in my opinion, its the only exhaust that i heard that sounds refined and agressive at the same time, resnator style exhaust i would choose the GMMG, i didnt have $700 at the time so i got the next best thing which is the loudmouth, these style exhaust sound more muscle car like.

Well... I have Flowmaster muffler and a cutout and I'm very happy with the setup: sounds a lot better than stock when the cutout is capped and when ever needed, just open the cutout and enjoy.
Best bang for the buck, IMO.

I would say find somone that has the set up that you're interested in and listen to it in person. It's really that best way to figure out what you want. I don't really think there's one right way to go about exhaust.
I thought my Flowmaster muffler sounded great until I installed a cutout. WOW! I love the sound with the cutout and it is nowhere near as loud as I thought it would be. I leave it open. I get compliments on the sound all the time.
I've got the McCord Power Plate wired into a convert. switch inside, so I can close the cutout if I ever want to. Usually I close it on trips. My 4.11 rear means I'm turning 2100 RPM at 80 MPH, which is right where the cutout drones. Push the switch, close the cutout, and I run through the Flowmaster which has a good sound, too.
Also, for what it's worth, I got a 13 RWHP gain on Hypertech's dyno just by opening the cutout.
