flowmaster will sound very nice on a stock exhuast, but probably won't flow the best (better than stock but not as good as other kinds)
i would suggest a Magnaflow, they sound great, flow great and most are polished so they look great too.
or you could kill two birds with one stone and get a Flowtech Warlock, which would give you a nice flowing/sounding muffler and you can uncap the bypass and run it like a cutout.

I highly recommend the dynomouth setup. There are several reasons why this is such a sweet deal.
1). Flows much better. Stock muffler on LS1 flows about 300 cmf. Most aftermarket mufflers/catbacks flow about 1000 cmf. I believe magnaflow flows around 1600 cmf. But the Dynomouth will flow the same as the SLP loudmouth at a whopping 2200 cmf. That translates to your car breathing much better and a pickup of 12-15 HP over stock.
2). Sound. It sounds friggin awesome. As long as you keep cats on the car there is no drone, no rasp and very minimal decelerating backfire (only happens a little when first started). It is deep and throaty at idle (far better then stock). It is loud on acceleration (but not quite loud enough to get a cops attention for noise violations). It absolutely screams at WOT (don't go WOT near a cop because that will draw thier attention for noise violations). I have turned several heads with this setup and I have gotten nothing but compliments on the sound.
3). Price. It only runs $150.00 installed if you reuse the factory tips you have now. Basically you buy a 12" dynomax bullet race muffler. Then you take it to a exhaust shop. Have them rip out the old muffler and fab a pipe where it used to be for dual out continuity. Then have them install the bullet race muffler (which looks like a fat pipe) in the I-pipe just behind the rear axel. No more big bulky muffler look as you now look like you have a loudmouth setup (hence the name dynomouth). The muffler costs $50 ($36 + shipping). The muffler shop charged me $100 for labor. Total was $150 and worth every penny.
Most catbacks are $300-$800 so this is a bargain. If you want a new look you can always buy a pair of stainless steel tips in whatever style you like and have them installed at the same time. That'll add to the $150 total though.
Excellent flow, nice HP gains, spectacular sound (IMHO) and the very cool no muffler look. I have zero complaints. It is a tad on the loud side (which most LS1 enthusiasts want). If you wanted quiet but only a tad louder then stock then try just a hooker aerochamber muffler. Nice flow and a little louder then stock.

The issue on sound is purely a matter of opinion.
I like the sound of my Flowmaster over the stock muffler and when ever needed, I'll just flip the switch on my electric cutout and bypass it completely.

Hey I'm getting ready to sell my Flowmaster (80 series) system. It sounds deep but not too loud but not too loud.
I'm selling it because the Intermediate pipe (between Y-pipe and muffler) is crap. The exhaust shop that the car's previous owner hired to build the exhaust crimp bent the I pipe so I'm just going to replace the whole thing.
The rear section (Flowmaster 80 series muffler/exit pipes) are fine though.
