Metal Shavings on drain plug

Metal Shavings on drain plug
I gave my Z its first oil change yesterday and I noticed (what seemed to me to be) a lot of shavings on the drain plug. Is this normal for the first oil change in a new car? Will it go away in the future or is there a problem?

whew, i'm not the only one then, my car has 20,000 miles on it and it still shows shavings on the plug on each oil change. it scared the hell out of me first but maybe it is just the norm with the ls1. anyone have an explantion for why this is happening.

Again - YES, it is normal. My car had the same thing after the first oil change (haven't changed second time yet), and it's normal. The shavings are mostly going to come from the piston rings which have to "seat" into the cylinders (basically "wear-in") to create the seal. The metal shavings are very fine though, and if you noticed, the magnet in the plug is very strong --- stick it onto the bottom side of the car next time, and feel the force you need to pull it off --- it's pretty strong!!

Just changed mine on the SS the other day with 40,500 on the clock.
Still got shavings !!
I "bounce" between Mobil 1 & Wal Mart super Tech - depends on what is available for 'cheap'.
Normal ? Don't know, although any complicated component w/ lots of moving parts is going to wear, and @ least w/ the magnetic plug the stuff is being captured as opposed to floating around the motor or plugging up the filter element.
I am not sure what it could be as aren't most bearings made of brass , which is non-magnetic ?
What ferrous items are internal that could wear ?
Piston rings ??
I'd like to know more about this, but am not particularly concerned.
Later !

Remember that these engines are aluminum which is nonmagnetic. The only thing I'm sure is metal is the crankshaft. I'm sure there are other parts. If you want to see particles, cut open the oil filter and move the paper element inside. That will stop your heart. If you want to realy get technical, you can start S.O.A.P. (Spectrometric Oil Analysis Program) to know exactly whats going on in there. Unless you have chuncks on the plug or in the drain pan, don't worry.
