M6...3rd grinding
M6...3rd grinding
Is this a common problem? My tranny grinds when shifting into 3rd over about 3k rpm, unless you wait a bit for the rpms to come down and don't clutch when coming out of 2nd. Is the synchro bad?
My T56 had a problem grinding into 3rd. Took it apart to rebuild it with D&D performance parts and found 3rd gear blocker split.
The split blocker would expand under centrifical force and open up a bit. That was the grinding. I bet your syncro is fine for now. You still need to open it up to fix it or not use 3rd. Might as well buy a steel 3/4 fork too.

does D&D have a website? If I wanted to use like a 100 shot on a motor with intake & exhaust and possibly some drag radials, what parts should I look @ changing or upgrading in my T56? I've already put a replacement clutch in it...I'm told that it's the Z06 clutch. Will I need more than that?

stock tranny +22psi on a 20g= smoke in 1st and 2nd = dead stock tranny
Here's the site: http://www.ddperformance.com/index2.htm
Most likely the synchro, but I would try a fluid change 1st and see what happens. I had my syncrhos replaced at 30K miles due to 3rd gear grinding at high RPM's, and then I started to have an intermittant grind at low RPM's at 60K miles. The dealer was backed up and couldn't get me in for a while, so I decided to just try and change the fluid to see if that helped. I haven't grinded since and I'm now at 73K miles. I just used regular Valvoline ATF.
For what it's worth I think we need to define what the syncro does. It syncronizes (matches) the rotation of the main shaft gear to the selected gear 1,2,3,4,5,6,R. The syncro is spininng free at half the speed of the selected gear. When you select gear you are pushing the blocker into the side of the syncro.
The blocker has carbon fiber on the inside of it. As you push it in when you shift the carbon fiber pad grabs and spins the syncro up to speed allowing the to to match. If your grinding it's beacuse your blocker ring is not getting the syncro up to speed. now I want to finish with saying I am not a trans guru so if you think I got it wrong tell me why? Ron

My third gear used to grind from time to time untill it jumped out taking out third fourth fifth and sixth syncro with it. After a rebuild it does not grind anymore, not even once. In other words watch it, it wasn't a plesant expericence when my tranny fell apart on the highway 100 miles away from home.
