LS1 VS. 1st Generation 402 Big Block???
To help with the decision go out to a dealer and test drive an LS1 f-body. You may hate them, you may love them.
On a side note, everyone that I've known that had an older muscle car that sitched it for a newer car loved the modern power but eventually regretted selling the classic and had wished that they could have found a way to have both.

What Al says is true, you never know until you drive it.
"drives better" is merely an opinion and perspective. My friend has a cammed and bolt-on LT1 with a steep gear that when you smash WOT, it really throws you back. When I have him drive my car, it seems like his gets up and goes a bit quicker. His mods give him a steep torque curve, however he is making 100 less horsepower than me, and my car easily walks his. The LS1 power curve is generally a lot smoother than other SBC motors.
You talk a lot about gas mileage... exactly how many mpg are you getting? Getting an LS1 where it sounds like you want it to be isn't gonna give you a significant mpg increase over your car it sounds like...
