Question LS or ZZ383

hello im new here but not new to fast cars..
im in the planning stage of my buildup, its a 80 camaro. im going to be useing it as my demo car so i want it looking/running awesome. this is what i came up with. ZZ383 w/ACCEL DFI GEN7 fuel inejtion and a 6speen tranny. also beef up the rearend w/a 4link.

ok let me get to my qwestions.....1st: which would you choose the LS1/LS2 or ZZ383. 2nd: how hard would it be to swap a LS engine into a older car. 3rd: would i gain anything by the LS.

thats all for now im sure ill have more qwestions later. remember im new here so take it easy on me....

or do you guys know a forum that might help me with this...

thanks
jamie

Re: LS or ZZ383

i say go for the LS1/6

they are proven power monsters when built up, are lightweight aluminum to keep nose weight down and there is a huge aftermarket for them.

take advantage of a great engine to begin with. a mild cam on stock heads you'll be putting out 380hp at the crank...little bigger cam and a set of ported stock heads and you're well on your way to 450+

currently my bolt on LS1, stock heads, 233 cam is pushing 390hp and still knocks down 24/25 mpg on the highway at 80mph.

Re: LS or ZZ383

thanks for the reply,

im trying to see if the LS would be a better choice. the weight isnt an issue the car will have a fiberglass front in. the ZZ383 has 450hp and the price is around $5000.00 for a longblock. what kind of price im looking at for a LS1/LS2 engine.

thanks again

Re: LS or ZZ383

I am wondering the same thing. How much potential does an LS motor have? I have been looking around for LS1 motors, and it appears that you could get a decent salvage for around 3K and some change. LS6's are out there, but obviously more expensive.

Re: LS or ZZ383

can probably find an LS1 motor from a wreck for $2500 (maybe less)

$2500 in heads, cam and you've got 450hp easy

if you can find an 01/02 engine, they already come with the LS6 intake.

Re: LS or ZZ383

the thing is i dont want to build the engine, just buy one then slap it in there. thats why i was thinking of the ZZ383(425hp) it has big power out the box.

thanks keep them comming

Re: LS or ZZ383

I am doing a LS1 Swap in my Vette... the price is MORE for sure...

The ZZ383 will be a direct replacement... easy to swap and get you right down the road. Much Cheaper!

The LS will add the AWE factor. And give you excellent bang for the buck. Though it will require lots of changes... I am doing the CARB setup on mine that saves alot in wiring and the fuel system.

I would be willing to bet, a LS1 with cam change vs the zz383 in the same car with the same gearing would be a DAMN close race. And you would be doing it with less weight, less cubic inches, Much less MODS to the engine. And get better milage to boot.

At best the zz383 will give you 350-360 RWHP (lot more torque) your LS engine with cam and headers will do the same.

just my .02

I have had both.

Re: LS or ZZ383

Ok, you want to compare a stock LS1 to a stroked and cammed Gen1 SBC? From what I can see w/the FI it'll be rated @ 405 hp not 450. Even the Carbe version is under 450 @ 425 hp.
http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/1578...rip-Engine.htm
http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/120/...inum-Heads.htm

The LS1's 320 hp rating is closer to what it gets at the rear wheels not flywheel.

I think you should run the numbers. $4790 for zz383 longblock + shipping + ~$3000 for the FI + whatever 6 speed you want to run.

For the $8000 you're spending on the engine alone you could have a complete stroked LS engine. A complete LS6 is ~$7300 and a 6 speed would bolt right up w/out any mods. LS1/6 aside, you could also get a built LQ4 6.0L or the 400 hp 6.0L LS2 also.

The bonus of the 383 is the amount of torque and the fact that it'll drop in easier and it would be cheaper to rebuild later on.

I personally wouldn't go w/a GM crate engine. You can get more engine for less from other sources.

Re: LS or ZZ383

installing a cam and swapping the valve springs is hardely "building" the engine.

my LS1 engine with a 233 cam is putting out 430 or so at the crank.

only internal change is cam and springs.

everything else will need to be bolted on anyway...headers, belts, air intake ssytem.
