Loud Popping after Header Install...help

I just got my 1 X 3/4 Kooks LT Headers installed along with the Catted Y-Pipe. I do not have the exhaust hooked up. There is a lot of popping when you take your foot off the gas or downshift and let the car slow itself down. It does not feel like it is missing at all. I also removed all emissions (AIR & EGR). I also put in NGK TR6 spark plugs gapped at a lil over .35.(nitrous waiting to be installed).

Maybe this is normal. I do not know.

There is also alot of vibration in the shifter...I am guessing this is b/c I do not have the exhaust hooked up, and it is causing a lot of vibration under the car..if this is normal, please let me know.

Thanks for any help.

You may be running rich, but if we're talkign open headers here, then this is almost normal unless it's an extreme amount of popping and shooting flames out. My stock exhaust pops a little shifting and decelerating under 2k rpms. Only sure way to get rid of alot of this is put an X or H pipe on the car.

Smurf, I am curious since I am ordering cooks myself... Did you have to notch your k-member or cut anything to make the headers fit??

Absolutely not. I thought I was going to have to after reading up on some posts. I removed the oil filter, and then jacked the car up about 2.5-3feet off the ground, and the drives side went right up with a little wiggling. The passenger side was cake, and did not need to be jacked up that high. Also, I just reused the stock manifold bolts...dont waste your $$ on ARP head studs for 100 bux or anything like that....just my .02 cents.

mebanditws6,

Running rich could be a possibility. Some people think a spark plug might be missing. If a spark plug were missing, it seems like I should be able to feel a loss of power / a sputter right? I am not running open headers exactly...Headers to a catted Y - pipe. My exhaust is not hooked up however.

Smurfman, thanks for the reply, it is very much appreciated..

I am glad they went on easy for ya, and I look forward to getting mine on...

I've always thought a little popping was normal. Every car I have heard running a really open exhaust has done it.

Yeah you'd have a definite loss of power firing on 7 cylinders, but if you have a bad wire that's when you'd get the missing/sputter. I'd try gapping the plugs back to stock and see what happens. You can always regap when you start to spray. I think that's .059 or .060.
