Unhappy Loud bang after engine knock. Now it won't turn over

My son has a 100% stock 98 Camaro and he was driving today and had some engine knock he could hear. He said it got real loud and then 10 seconds later (teenager driving) he heard a real loud bang and the car shut down. He was doing 70 on the freeway and coasted to a stop. I tried turning it over and it just barely did and all the lights and accessories went out and the alarm went off and would not stop. It appears to be locked up now. I assume the worst but could it be something simple or is the motor toast? How do you verify the damage and whats the cheapest way to fix this?

Take a 24mm socket on a breaker bar and try to turn the engine over by hand. If it won't budge or stops dead somewhere, the engine, you, and your son are screwed.

It's a 98, and oil pump failures are not uncommon on those. Did your son happen to check the oil pressure, or see a warning light?

Finally, if there is catastrophic engine component failure, it's cheaper to replace an LS1 than it is to rebuild it, IF it's even rebuildable (depending upon severity of damage).

Forgot to mention the oil pressure went to zero. Thats what I expect my bank account to have in it when this is over.
