There are minor differences between each year but they're too insignificant to buy one car instead of another over.

Just go find the car YOU like the best, seriously.

I have heard that 98 tend to leak more oil,not sure if this is true. 2001 and 02 have the zo6 intake already one them the 98-00 don't.pretty much about the same to work on.find one you like and go from there.

98 - 02 are basically equal...

01 - 02 put out just SLIGHTLY more HP average because they came with the LS6 intake manifold however at best we're talking 5 - 7 HP in a car thats putting out 350 HP to the flywheel, nothing that a few mods / better intake can't correct... You're not going to feel any difference...

As far as working on them? They all use the same headers I believe so tune ups are just as difficult for one year to the next...

'98 - '00 had a higher lift cam, but the true "LS1" intake manifold. They also had an EGR valve in the mix.

'01 - '02 used the LS6 intake and a different camshaft (apparently the same as the 6.0L truck engines ). While having less lift, being combined with the LS6 intake, it netted a few more HP. Also, for those 2 years, the EGR system was deleted.

The exhaust manifolds were revised in 2000 ... not sure how different they are from the '98 - '99?

The transmissions were all still the same 4L60E and T56, and nothing really changed for the rear diffs either (expect for Torsens becoming the standard unit, and Auburns being an "option" for the SS/WS6 I believe ).

In terms of how hard they are to work on, you will find them MUCH easier than your LT1 . Plugs and wires can be done within a couple hours. Just changing the WIRES on my buddy's LT1 took almost ~6 hours!!! There's just a lot more room to work in/around the engine bay. Oh yeah, and no Optispark . The LS1 ignition system is virtually flawless, up to several hundred HP too . And since they've been out for quite some time now, the price of aftermarket parts seems to have come down a lot.

Oh, one major difference (specific to M6) is the clutch system. GM tried the unique "pull type" clutch in the LT1, but went to a simply "push" type for the LS1 that seems to work better, and the actual cost of clutches is actually much less too, AFAIK . Just something else to consider.

Ok newbs

98's The coil packs are bolted directed to the heads, bigger injectors, bigger fuel tank

99-00 The coilpacks are in a rack bolted to the head, better flowing heads

01-02 LS6 intake,LS6 clutch,no EGR,smaller cam to match intake and newer style headers

They are all pretty much the same to work on and 01-02 usually dyno the highest and 98's are normally harder to tune

Also like stated above I can do my wires and plugs taking my time in 1hr flat
