Exclamation longtubes, mids, or shorty headers

Ok i was set on Long tube headers when the warranty is up, but yesterday i saw a race between two of my friends GT's. One is a 2000, and the other a 2001 both 5 spd's. Well they both have 3.73's, yet the 2000 has longtubes w prochamber, dumped two chambers, a little ghetto ram air kit, and a bbk cold air kit. The deal is that the 2001 always wins in the quarter yet the 2000 will win on the freeway, raced a number of times b/c the guy in the 2000 was pissed.

Ok here is the point, my friend with the 2001 is always at the tracks in houston and he says that the LT's take away alot of low end torque compared to the horties. The 2000 does dyno more hp but it only shows it on the free way, So i came to the conclusion, LT's, Midlengths, or shorties, I do plan on installing a cam, and heads in the future, prob about in a year. I love opinions, so throw them at me. thanks

If emissions aren't a concern and it doesn't sound like they are, definitely go with LTs.

* Especially if you plan on H/C in the future.

I'd say if you were leaving everything "relatively" stock except for headers, long-tubes may not be the best things to install without a good cam. It is true that you will not gain as much torque as you will horsepower, so your car will perform better up at higher RPM's vs down at low RPM's. If you had mid-length headers, you'd probably maintain a smoother torque curve, and still have good bottom end torque while gaining some power up top.

The ultimate combo though, is to get long-tubes, but upgrade your cam to a cam that's going to compensate and make-up that low end torque, or at least performs so well up top that it makes up for low end loss.

I imagine LT's will be the most expensive though, but hey, everything's got its price, right?!

Definately go with the LT's. The manifolds on the 01-02's were upgraded and flow a little better than the previous years. You would not see much of a difference going with shorties or mid length headers. Hell, you might not even gain that much with LT's, but it will help it when you break open the motor for real mods. Look at this thread for some interesting reading:
