last min tips?header install

Ok so i got some longtubes to put on my car today(i have the day off) and i wanted to know if anyone had any last min. tips. Going into a 99 camaro, i'm pre-soaking the bolts in liquid wrench. and i have all the need tools besides a hack saw.

1. Make sure you retrace the threads in the head itself. The best way is to take a dremil to the side of one of the bolts then screw it in to each one of the bolts hole to clean out the muck from the threads.

2. Get a buddy to help you out.

Well i just drove the car so i gotta wait for it to cool down again. I went and bought some new header bolts just in case, and i bought some new sockets for the project as well as picked up two taller jack stands.

Re: last min tips?header install

I hope you know that this will take a while... It took me 14 hrs, and I've NEVER done this before...

You will need:

1- Patience

2- Time to kill, just in case...

3- I ended up breaking an EXH clamp. I noticed that my cat-back was loose...

4- 4x6 wood pieces, for cribbing... take a look at Teke184's cardomain page, he has a full write-up.. I used it...Basically universal advice...

It's worth the time.. I think I might go as far to say, I enjoyed it...

Re: last min tips?header install

I had to use a lot of different ratchet sizes and attachments, also agree with having a friend help at least to hold the headers in place while you put in the first few bolts. It was a while since my install but I think it would be easiest to reach the last coil if you unbolt the passenger side AIR tube first.

egr's off, there is some kind of tube laying over the last bolt with no slack. the bolt is resessed a little to where a wrench won't work ethir...

It might be to late, but I recommend locking header bolts. Mine have drawn out 3 times already. They seem to be holding this time though.

Use a small open end, a quarter turn at a time and don't ever put that bolt back in.

Re: last min tips?header install

Casper Electronics is the company that makes the extensions and the sims. You should be able to get them from any one of the sponsers of this site. If you don't want the check engine light you will need the extensions. Make sure you continue to check those headers at the collectors and the flanges to make sure you don't have any leaks before you burn out a set of O2's. They can get expensive if you buy them from GM. Congrats, I bet it sounds bad ***.
