K&n Fipk

I have a 98 camaro z28 with a ram air hood. Is the K&n Fuel injection performance kit really worth $300? How does it compair, performance wise to a whisper lid? Thanks for your help.

This seems to be a touchy subject with a lot of people. Everyone you talk to will have a different opinion, but the dyno numbers dont lie, you get more hp with a fipk than just a lid. From what I see, roughly 8 more.

There is a cheaper alternative with volant, which sells for $275 at tbyrne.com
See picture here
It had a box which keeps out hotter engine air, which the k&n doesnt have. I dont know much about it though, I dont find many people who have purchased one.

Anyway, thats just my opinion. There will be 50 people behind me who tell you to get a lid ;]

In my OPINION a lid, filter, and Super Sucker will out perform the FPIK or Volant AT THE TRACK. Maybe not on the dyno?

Nobody really seems to know for sure. There seems to be a issue with hot air under the hood with the fipk. The other poster is correct that they have dyno'd higher than the lids. Usually the dyno is run with the hood up however. So there is no real definate answer on this.

Just wanted to point out again that the hot air might not be an issue with the volant I mentioned above ;]

looks like I may have to get the k&n huh? do some more dyno runs!?

Ill have to wait for some $$ but it shouldnt be any big deal tho....

I say just get what you can afford and what you want...

If you get the lid, skip the filter.. just plan on getting ac delco filters.. they flow better... and mine has 16000+ miles and its looking fine still!

I never paid a cent for the Stealth.. Only tested it.. Warlock brought it down from San Antonio, paid for my car to be on the dyno for 1 hour.. I did the rest.. Which was switch parts back and forth and turn wrenches while the techs drove the car on the rollers.

I would not recommed the stealth to anyone. EVER.
Just get a lid. Thats why I will be wanting to test a Volant and K&N FIPK because my car is consistant and I havent changed anything. No exhaust, nothing.. Just the fluids.

I head the fipk made 8 more hp With the hood open When they closed the hood the lid made more. Atleast thats what i had heard. I do know a few guys running the fipk and swear by it. Id like to try it at the track one day so i can see for myself..I know that wasnt much help but thats what i had heard when i was looking to buy a fipk

I’m more of a quarter mile time guy than a HP guy, so I don’t know much about how that works. I didn’t even think they tested with the hood down. Even if they did, I wouldn’t think the lid would actually make more … but rather not so much less.

This seems to be a daily topic that never gets solved, so I would beg anyone who decides to get one to do just what cabbage did:
Dyno the car without it, stick it on and dyno it again.

By the way, thanks for the info Ian, I was actually thinking about buying the stealth. Good work ;]

This may be a dumb question, but I'm new to LS-1's. Is it possible to run the KNFIK with the Super sucker ram air?
