Idle problems, car seems very sluggish

I've been noticing some problems when my car is idling. It's actually died a couple of times on my wife while she was stopped at a red light. I also notice a slight hesitation when I give the car gas to take off. I have 72000 miles on the car (2000 SS). I have yet to change the spark plugs, but I'm wondering if there is something else that I should take a look at also (fuel filter maybe).

The fuel filter should be changed every 30k or so.

you may have a faulty TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) that can cause your car to idle bad and hesistate. hope that helps

Lightbulb One thought on the idle side :

The throttle butterfly has a tiny hole in the bottom of it that allows for idle air when the throttle is closed.

If this is gunked up, idle could be affected although no idea if this would cause any hesitation problems or not.

It's easy to look at - remove the rubber air bellows from the front of the throttle , and you will be able to see it.

Here is a pic - from
