I think I just melted my clutch!
So I go and it feels alright, maybe feels like a bit of tire slippage, but when I go for the clutch, the pedal is like an inch of the floor! So I hammer it back in, and thick, grey smoke starts coming out of the engine bay, some into the interior. This **** smells BAD! I know it's clutch cause I've smelled it before. Now the clutch pedal is noticeably softer, and the friction point is less defined, in fact almost non-existant it seems. But it is still strong though, absoulutely no slippage whatsoever.
So did I just nuke my clutch? Or severely reduce it's life? the pedal seems easier to push down, and is softer coming out. Oh and my interior REEKS! will this smell go away, or do I need to have my car fumigated?
How much longer do you think this clutch will last? Hmm, I guess now I have an excuse to install a racing clutch
or perhaps I can convince GM it went out under normal driving conditions.... after all, the car had 400 on the odometer when I bought it, and they know it, so I can claim whoever put those miles on ****ed it up somehow. who knows.

well after it cooled down it was a little better, but not much. This was worse than a typical clutch roasting though I think. Usually there isn't a dense cloud of smoke pouring out of the engine bay and into the interior. It lost it's "new" friction point feeling, it's a lot softer now, but it still shifts fine. I haven't tested my launch yet, I hope I don't lose anything there.
Also anyone know of a good aftermarket clutch? (better than stock)

Hey - I did that about two weeks into owning my new car as well. It smelled really bad for the whole day, and I just -knew- I melted down the clutch or something.
It hasnt had the same 'rugged' new feel to it since, but I havent noticed any problems at all or anything.
The pedal was stuck half way down and I gunned it to catch up to a ricer. Yikes! WHen I realized I wasnt moving, first I checked to see if I was in 5th... then I decided to switch in and out of gear just to make sure it was in second... Yikes! ooh I felt so bad for my baby... smelled horrible, and I swear I saw a bit of 'smoke' or something, but the smoke was probably my imagination. If there was any, not much.

Yeah well there was a lot of smoke here and I stunk up the entire lot, I was in a McDonalds parking lot, and after, you could smell it from anywhere, even inside McDonalds. (or maybe that was just thier food?
) But ya we had to bail out of the car to keep from choking to death.

It is most likely not the clutch. I had the same problem i'm at 35000 miles on a 1999. it is the slave cylender for the clutch. if the petal is stuck half way down that is what it is. is covered under warrenty search about clutchs for more on the slave. clutch is most likely ok....
