You wanna shift get a stick car.
I hear this all the time. Maybe no advantage but let me ask you, whats the point in putting 1st 2nd and 3rd in an automatic if your not going to use it for something. I just use it to intimidate people in mustangs but you would think if there was no reason for it they would just put Overdrive, neutral, and park in an A4?

don't worry, I pinged my rev limiter about 4 times just yesterday in the rain just buy farting around. don't worry about it, that's what it's there for, to save your engine.

The different gear selections are there to let you hold a gear when you need to. Nothing wrong with holding a gear to keep it in the power band.
For WOT driving/racing let the computer do it.

You are VERY correct sir! We just went to the track on Sunday, and I readjusted my shift points before I ran (the 1-2 is still a "tad" low, and the 2-3 actually holds a little too long now) and I just left the shifter in 4th/OD for all but 1 run, and got my best time of the day (1st run) in OD! So yeah, as long as the shift points are set proper, then it is best to leave it alone, but I'm not opposed to manually shifting either, and hate guys who think there's no point, because sometimes there is.

ill agree..he's another guy that saw a gain out of doing it on a stock car...like i said though, once the car has a stall and/or tuning, its useless....

Re: I hit the rev limiter, did it break anything?

One of the reasons you can choose a gear in an auto is for hills. If you don't want to break, just give it a downshift. Engine breaking kicks ***. Also for towing, although I doubt any of us actually tow with our car. A built auto tranny will shift faster than any human ever can. But I doubt the A4 that comes in our cars are, "built".

Plus, there is alot more that can go wrong in shifting an automatic, like hitting the wrong gear because gear 2 and 3 and are the same position up from gear 1. (Not distance, just talking about a general "up").

I can't wait to take my stock SS up to the track to run it. I'm excited about it. Let me ask you guys a questions, for a stock SS, what gear should I finish in?

I have only run 14.00's in my M6 SS (1999). I'm babying it off the line though. For anyone reading this...what is the ideal RPM to launch (stock, street tires) and shift at?
