I hit the rev limiter, did it break anything?
Okay I was messing around, shifting my A4 myself for the first time. I made the rookie mistake of bouncing off the rev limiter. The motor hit the rev limiter 3 times when I shifted from 2nd to 3rd. I'm not sure how high the engine revved, because my tach is off(car shifts itself at 5700RPM's according to the tach).
Now I am worried that I broke something, but the car seemed fine while driving normally back to my house. I didn't open her up again after being so cruel to her

Re: I hit the rev limiter, did it break anything?
dude its a rev limiter. its there to (surprize) limit your revs
. its there so that you dont damage your motor. its not the best for your motor but you didnt hurt it. your fine, just relax

. Last time I went to the track, I did 6 runs. 3 of them were 13.2's, 3 were 13.3's. Guess which ones I manually shifted?
I've also bounced off the rev limiter a couple times as well, but the stock LS1's are ok 'til around ~6500 - 7000, and that's where the springs may start losing their effectiveness and let a valve float, or a pushrod could bend, so keep it below 6500 and you'll be ok

[QUOTE=Capn Pete]That's not always true

Manually shifting an automatic is about as stupid as watching The Fast & The Furious. There is no advantage to manually shifting an automatic. I know plenty of guys in the 10s and 11s with automatic LS1 street cars. Not a single one of them has ever manually shifted their autos
The worst you could have done was many bent a pushrod, but you would hear that. I'm sure you're fine, but stop with that manually shifting. It's AUTOMATIC for a reason

. I manually shifted all the 13.2xx runs
.--- Time ----- Speed --- 60' time (quickest/fastest are in bold)
1) 13.331 @ 105.32, 2.004
2) 13.210 @ 106.09, 1.979
3) 13.269 @ 105.83, 1.954
4) 13.278 @ 105.69, 1.992
5) 13.312 @ 105.80, 1.984
6) 13.327 @ 105.82, 1.982

. I realize that if an automatic is setup to shift at exactly the right time, then there's no point shifting manually, but in my case (and most) the tranny always shifts too soon, so holding out each gear longer was worth a full tenth of a second for me

.Your right in that the only reason your manual shift runs are better is that your shift points aren't right after the gear change. So make them right. And then there will be absolutely NO advantage in manually shifting an automatic as I said before.
Re: I hit the rev limiter, did it break anything?
uh oh, we had this conversation a few months ago.....i also had dropped a tenth shifting my STOCK, untuned, stock converter automatic myself.
there is a performance gain in doing it when the car is stock. with an aftermarket converter and a tune of the shift points however it becomes useless...
as far as the rev limiter thing, dont worry. i know it's a little bit of a scary sound/feeling when you bounce the lmiter but its not going to hurt anything. all you did was cut the fuel to bring the revs back down to where they shouhld be. now if you were on nitrous and banged the limiter you could have had a serious problem....

I'm starting to consider that as my next step, but I'm still not sure yet (I've got a set of drag radials on order.....I'll see if they help first
). Maybe the reason my times aren't all that fast are because I didn't do anything to my car to reduce weight --- I mean the spare tire & jack were still in place, my 10" sub & amp are still in the back, and I was running on street tires fully inflated around ~32 psi
--- basically, complete "street trim"

6 months ago I raced some jerkoff in a Maxima. Went from 2nd to 3rd on my M6.....car went into 1st instead (this was me, not the trans...painful either way
) Anyhow, the engine went to 6500-7000 for a good 4-5 seconds, the rear chirped several times. The engine was screaming off the rev limiter, my wife was screaming from the passenger seat that I was a dumbass, my mind was screamng I was even more of a dumbass, and the dog was howling from the backseat due to all the screaming.....etc, etc. Yep, the car was only 2 weeks old and it was an extremely traumatic experience for all (dog included)
.Long story short. I pulled the valve cover on the passenger side of the engine. I pulled out EVERY pushrod. None were bent. The car runs fine 6 months later. I get the usual piston slap and valve clatter...but no damage.
If I didn't jack up my M6 after thuis stunt (and I realize I was lucky), you should be fine bouncing off the limiter at 5700RPM
Count your blessings and don't do it again!!Schantin

My friend miss shifted my car from 3rd to 2nd at 110 and it did TONS of damage. But what you are talking about shouldnt even concern you in the least.
