Is this true? If so, why? That's all, just curious

lower than the 01s and 02s because of the LS6 intake manifold. but the 98s have a better fuel system and camshaft. With the 98s you mostly need to worry about the oil pump problem.

I dont think the 98-00 cam is "better".
its specs show it to be larger but not better.

The cam in 98-00 seems to lack low end power whereas the 01-02 have power all over the place..

just my observations..

most 2001's and all 2002's have the 241 heads, which are better than earlier heads. of course, the newer cars also have the better intake manifold.

anyone please explain any differences in ls1 heads (the 241 head?) the differences i was aware of were the 01-02 had the ls6 intake and cast iron exhuast manifolds that supposedly flow better. also they changed the egr. however the 98-99 cam has 498 lift vs only 473 lift 01-02. please point out any other changes you can think of. thanks.

I wish that everyone could get this straight just once. They changed exhaust 1 year then changed intakes the next year.
98-99 tubular exhaust
00-02 cast iron manifolds
98-00 LS1 intake and EGR
01-02 LS6 intake
98 perimiter bolt heads
99 and most 00 #853 head castings (my 00 had 241s)
01-02 #241 head castings which are said to be an improved casting from the #853
some 00-02 have LS6 style motor castings too.
98-00 cam has more lift but 01-02 cam has different valve timing giving them a broader power band.

Sorry about the hijack guys, but I just bought a '98 LS1/4L60E
to put in my S10 and I would like to know about the oil pump
problem too so I can check it before it causes headaches. I did a search and really couldn't find anything definate. Thanks!

the early LS1s had an oil pump that would SOMETIMES fail. not always, I guess there wasn't that much notice when it did. There is a ported LS1/LS6 oil pump I think for about 150-160. Its not very hard to find. But I was under the impression GM didn't fix this issue until late 99

i have a 98 and have not dynoed it yet. but i ordered a back issue from motor trend that tested a car just like mine and it tested at 282.5/310.7

i guess that is normal engine to tire hp loss

the autos i think dyno that low due to the 2.73 gears. the sticks and autos with the 3.23 gears dyno around 290ish pre 2001. 2001/2002 dyno 305-310.
