The hump

Hey guys,
What exactly is in the "hump?" You know what I'm talking about... that big metal hump behind the back seat. Yeah, the one that helps make the car have absolutely no trunk space..hehehe.. is the gas tank in there somehwhere, or is that where the hampster wheel is?? I've never been able to get it up on a lift yet to look, so this is my lazy way of find out. Thanks.

Lightbulb You guessed it.

That hump is the sheet metal over the gas tank, which is mounted above & forward of the rear axle to assist in collision safety.

Probably also helps weigh distribution as well.

Crazy thing about trunk space - from what I have read, even the F verts have more space in cubic feet than the Stangs - same w/ the coupes.

Trick is that our cars have a strange shape to that space !

The folding rear seat helps the cargo capacity also.

That other hump is unaesthetically pleasing , but otherwise presents no problem with passenger space - at least not from my experience in the right hand side of my car.

Thumbs up

Yep, that "hump" is hiding the gas tank, but also the factory exhaust, and it allows room for the rear suspension to move as well with all that crap tucked up in there!

That one can be a little annoying and what makes me angry is that GM was too lazy to take it out of the V8 models. That bump on the passenger side is for the V6 cat.

Would it be possible to bang out that bump on the passenger side?

Seems like I read about somebody doing that but can't remember where. I can't think of why it would hurt but then again i've never really thought about it.

Yeah, I think I read the same thing once...I just have no idea where, or when. But it can be done.

I've been so tempted to take a plasma cutter to the passenger side hump, cut it out, and weld a sheet in place.

As for the rear hump ... yup ... it's the gas tank mostly.

You're only 3 hours away...if you do it, I'd like to see how that turns out.
