High milage ls1

Im going toward the end of the week to look at a 1998 camaro z28 with 88,000 miles. It's at a saturn dealership So I would like to know what I should look for as far as mechanical failures with high milage 98's? The part about it being at a saturn dealership makes me question if anything is wrong. The price is 9,777$

What area do you live....? Most LS1's with milage like that will have had at least 1 water pump problem, 6 Window motor problems, Pinion seal leaks on virtually every LS1 with over 50k miles, make sure the oil was changed on time and make sure it drives strait. Is it auto or Stick? If auto see how it shifts gears..? Does it shift to hard or too soft. If it's manual, so how the clutch is is and how easy it is to shift into gears... but 10 thousand isn't too bad.....How does it look?

Im from new york and its in new jersey only 26 miles away. Ive only seen a picture so im going to see how clean it is. I looked at one this weekend that had the **** beat out of it with 22 k miles and the week before one with 60 k miles and it drove/looked like a new car. So i know milage doesnt mean everything. The car is an auto.

Thumbs up

As long as it has been maintained properly, it should last at least another 80K+ miles without any major problems.

Window motors, water pumps, pinion seals etc. are all pretty minor issues. Just check all the usual: sights, smells and sounds and go from there.

I don't see anything suspicious on it being sold at a Saturn dealership. They might have gotten it from an auction, from a swap with another dealership etc. Or maybe the owner just simply wanted to get something totally different? Who knows...

Good luck!

Well, my 2000 TA has about 75K on it, daily driver. So far all it had done was one window motor, pinion seal, oil pump, tranny (idiot before me didn't know how to shift into 3rd) manual, and a headlight replaced 2 times, and also the power steering pump (it borke because i did something i was not supposed to do).

It's scary how accurate that is.

It's probably at the Saturn dealership because the guy wanted something more economical for his next car so he traded it in for a Saturn.

Nothin wrong with it being in a Saturn lot. try and get the price down to 8500. Settle for 9. Should run fine. Definetly check the tranny out make sure it shifts under all driving conditions and check the fluid. The 4l60e is not meant for these cars unless theyre intention is grandma driving. My friends Formula killed the tranny with 4000 miles. Ive had mine go twice in 17k. Then I got a race built one and was done with my problems. As long as the tranny is fine and the rear isnt making any weird noises the LS1 motor is gonna last a long time. Mine has 19,000 on it. Gonna hit 20k real soon. I feel like my car is becoming high mileage.

Saturn dealerships dont dicker on prices, what you see is what you pay.

As far as mileage goes, i bought my 2000 z28 with 74k on it in march and i dont have any complaints, i paid 10,900 for it and its worth every penny as far as i'm concerned.

price seems about right

i just paid 13.9k for a 1999 camaro SS with 43k miles on it, and on the outside it looks damn near flawless

only problem i could tell is warped rotors (even more so now that i own it, hah) and leaking tranny tailshaft, which we've replaced.

pulls like a raped ape

bought mine for $11500 with 24K mi at a Jeep dealership in Webster, TX

Everything was tip-top except for the clutch, which someone had adjusted improperly and caused extra wear on the clutch.

Also, the driver side window seal on top of the door is trying to escape.

Every time I shut the door without holding the window it pops up.

Other than that its 99.9% all good

If it had been an SS they would surely have drove the price up to $16000

They wanted $14000 for it but I got them down to $11,500

Just walk away and make them think your not going to buy it. Thats what I did.

Of course, I paid cash, which helped EXTREMELY because he had the cash right there in his face.

Also they were having some sort of sale so maybe that helped.

The "boss" told me "Why would I take $11500 for it when I can go to any dealer and get $14000 for it?"

When I told him I guess your gonna have to sell it to a dealer or someone else because all I've got is this $11500, He said $13000, I said $11500 and warranty.

Eventually he fell in and I drove it home and hour later, with a 3 mo/3000 mi warranty.

If you look long enough, like I did (3 months) you will stumble along a good one.

My second option was a black SS in Florida for the same price but with 25K mi. 6 speed also.
